Getting random BSOD since upgrade

My upgrade was this...

*OVERCLOCKED* AMD Phenom II X3 Tri Core 720 2.80GHz @ 3.50GHz / Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P Motherboard / Corsair 4GB DDR3 XMS3 PC2-1600C9DHX TwinX (2x2GB) Bundle

Which has fit in with my Corsair HX 620W and XFX Geforce 8800 GTX. I am also now running Windows 7 RC.

I've not touched the bios except for a boot order so its all set as Overclockers have configured. However im getting random BSOD's typically when playing games as thats the main usage. The BSOD message is...

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

I also got a BSOD the first time i ran a 3D Mark Vantage (trial) on the 3rd test. Second time it worked.

The latest which was literally 5 minutes ago was during a game of Fallout 3. I was outside in the wastes running around killing things. Its actually happened twice in the last 30 minutes, and happened 3 times yesterday too (once during Left 4 Dead and the other two Fallout 3 again).

Do you think the overclock might be something to do with it as the error implies memory and thats partly what is overclocked in the bundle?

If it helps after a reboot Windows tells me...

you could try underclocking the memory a bit, I know its meant to be stable but see if that is the issue.
Note all your bios settings down first, as OcUK have set them up, then yeah Id just try underclocking the RAM see if that helps, alternatively try running memtest on it, maybe one of the sticks is slightly out

Im actually quite convinced its the overclock but there may be a perfectly good reason for it.

I ran 3D Mark 05 earlier and it again BSOD on the 1st CPU test. Same page error too.

Ive reverted the BIOS back to default settings after noting all the Overclockers config and have now run both 3D Marks without fail. The good reason im thinking of though is related to the motherboard having an 8pin connection.

I made a post in another thread about my PSU not coming with a 8pin connection (or 2x4 pin connections). I only have 1x4 pin which is currently plugged into half of the 8pin mobo connection.

Seeing as this is for voltages, and the OcUK bios config had overclock settings as well as voltage settings, would this be the primary suspect? Ive already requested the right cables from Corsair which will hopefully sort it out if this is indeed the issue.

Or would that have nothing to do with it and should i contact OcUK? The overclock bundle does state "maximum stability" :)

What do ya think?

Thanks,
D.

Ok its definately the overclock. I just found my PSU does have the 8pin connection. I thought it was one of the modular cables but its hard wired. Because my last mobo didnt need it, i tied it back out the way!!!

Anyway with that plugged in and their overclock settings on, im still getting issues. Even had a few just in Windows.

Reverting BIOS back to defaults works fine. Very annoyed. And to top it all off i bought this on Monday but received it Thursday. And on Thurdsay the bundle goes into the "weekly offers" and is £33 cheaper. Plus the RAM was £80 inc vat but its now only £65 inc vat.

Not happy at all.

RMA TIME!!!!!!!! :(

Have you tried running memtest on the memory when it on the OC settings, I suspect thats your most likely cause.
If it fails this then thats problem, if not theres a couple of alternatives to RMAing the whole thing
1) Post in Customer support forum, theyll advise you on tweaks necessary
2) Post your BIOS setting here, we'll try and advise you what needs tweaking

I think exactly that. Looks like your memory or CPU overclock is unstable. I'd suspect the memory. Raise the memory voltage slightly.

Thanks i apprechiate the support.

Ok here are the BIOS settings that Overclockers have configured. I may have short handed a couple of the entries but it should make sense. Where you see bracketed items thats exactly what the BIOS has down next to the settings.

Row Precharge: 9T (STD: 7T) (Auto: 9T)
Minimum RAS: 28T (STD: 20T) (Auto: 25T)

Three things I dont get are from the sale advert in this line "Tested together at 1600MHz, Vdimm = 1.80V, at latency settings of 9-9-9-24". So why is it set to 9-9-9-28 timings, getting 1.750V instead of 1.80V, and set to x6.66 which is 1372 Mhz instead of 1600 Mhz?

Ive tried playing around with a couple of things but all of them have not worked. Things like putting the 4th timing at 24T, or putting the voltage at 1.80V.

To be honest I dont actually mind returning the whole thing because i purchased this as an overclocked bundle and its the overclock which causes the problem. I shouldnt have to be in the BIOS configuring it and messing around myself. It should just work out of the box.

If anyone has some suggestions for things to try or if there is something glaringly obvious please let me know.

Thanks,
D.

FYI for anyone interested. I ended up RMAing this due to Overclock settings changes (from OcUK support suggestions) not making a difference.

Ended up ordering the i7 overclock bundle though which im hoping does not follow the same pattern! This also means Overclockers just made £200 more from me.

Maybe it was a conspiracy to do that :)
