not seen this with my own eyes yet, but i believe that my friend has a duel booting laptop running xp and vista. the xp was for his old job and there is nothing needed on the the xp side. He wants to remove this partition to free up some space for the vista side.

what's the best way to do this, my under standing is xp goes on first on a duel boot?

I'm guessing Vista is the primary operating system - that's the default anyway if Vista is installed after XP.

In Vista, right-click Computer in the Start menu and click Manage. This will bring up the computer management console. On the left menu pane, choose Disk Management and wait a moment. You should then see an interface that will allow you to delete the XP partition and expand the Vista partition into the unallocated space.

Always make a backup before resizing disk partitions.

Uh, don't think that will work as the vista boot file is located on the XP partition and deleting it will not allow Vista to boot correctly. Someone please shoot me down?

You might have a point actually, but the MBR is fixable. Its hard to tell without knowing all the details. Nevertheless it's why I stress taking a backup beforehand.

Worst case scenario it won't boot, but you'll have an up to date backup and it will just be a case of installing Vista from scratch and restoring your files.

ok so not so simple, the issue is she has loads of programs installed on the vista side so formatting and reinstalling is gonna be an issue, was hoping i could zap the xp one without having to do that... :(
