I want to get rid of Bing on the toolbar thingy in IE8 but having searched and searched, I still can't get rid of the piece of ****!

It's not listed in remove programs and ghosted out in the 'manage add-ons' menue or under 'tools' for IE.

Never mind how it was installed, I just want rid......!!!!

Any advice?

Vista home premium.

Sorry my bad. There should be in remove programs. It may be listed as MSN Toolbar and not BING. I have just read that CCleaner can get rid of it. Worth a try.

Just to be clear, are you talking about the search bar that appears in the top right hand corner of IE and remembers your last search? Or the actual Bing toolbar program? If the latter, I removed mine through add / remove programs I believe. If you're talking about the annoying thing that tells everyone else what porn you've been browsing for, there's a reg fix for it if you Google.

The search bar at the top right, beneath the window sizing buttons: small window with orange bing icon in and a magnifying glass. It is not listed in add/remove as either MSN or Microsoft or anywhere, as far as I've been able to look; tried Task manager when Bing running and it just shows up as IE in the processes list. They obviously don't want you to delete it, ever.

It's not a real problem but I would like to get rid if possible so any assistance is gratefully received.

I think that is just the search bar, it's part of IE, you might be able to hide it but it's just IE running, not Bing or anything like that. There should be options to change it to Yahoo or Google or whatever you want. Like someone else has said there's a registry fix which lets you hide the search bar but it isn't doing any harm.

Should work in Vista as well.

You can change it for Google easy enough. Click the drop down arrow and choose "manage search providers > find more search providers" choose Google from the page that loads then remove Bing

The reg fix above doesn't work with Windows 7 (for those that might be interested)

Looks like I did it by deleting defmgr.exe.

All seems to be working ok and no search window showing .... hoorah!

Thanks for the input guys.
