Getting rid of download accelerator plus

I used to, stupidly, use DAP as a download manager but about a week or so ago I finally ditched it in favour of the DownThemAll plug-in for Firefox.

Well, here's the problem. Every time I click on a *.exe file to download it I get the blasted DAP "queued' page pop up and an error box saying that "DAP could not be started". I've cleaned every reference to DAP from the registry, I've changed the actions to do with a particular file from within Firefox and yet it still persists.

Any ideas?

Have you checked that DAP hasn't left any files anywhere? Perhaps a plugin file in Firefox's plugin folder?

how did you ditch it? did you uninstall from control panel? i would go through the registry, and look and see if there are any mentions of it there imho

Ok, thanks guys.

After searching I seemed to have missed one file in the Firefox plugin folder, npdap.dll, which seemed to be the culprit. Anyhow, I nuked it and attempted to grab a small *.exe file and it didn't bring up the DAP screen. So, here's hoping.

Sounds good. Perhaps try restarting the PC just to "flush" anything out and try downloading something else again and see what happens.

Plus kudos for dumping DAP for DownloadThemAll!

The best uninstaller I've ever used has to be Your Uninstaller 2006 if you can get your hands on a copy. Not only does it do a normal XP uninstall but then checks everything to pick up any pieces left.

I also left DAP in favour of DTA about 3 months ago.

Rebooted the PC and it looks like it's fixed. Tried another *.exe and it brought up the Firefox download interface instead of the DAP page.

Funny thing is though, with DAP my connection was maxing out at 650Kb (ish), yet with DownThemAll it's pushing 750Kb+!

Cool. Sounds like DAP has kicked the bucket.

Woot. Sounds good. Probably because DTA is a better program, smaller and more closely integrated into FF.
