I am trying to get rid of the ASK Toolbar on someone's laptop. Every time I try to uninstall it I end up with a message reading:
"Error 1136. The specified account already exists"
Can anyone explain this bizarre message and offer suggestions as to how I can remove this wretched thing?

I got involved because the laptop is running Windows Vista and Chrome had started displaying a message telling the user that Chrome would no longer be updated for Vista. I don't use Chrome and have put Firefox v48.0.2 on in its place. I gather that the latest version of Firefox will not run on XP or Vista either.

I eventually managed to crack this with the aid of a whole host of free anti-Virus, anti-Malware & anti-Spyware software - AVG, MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, AdAware, Avast, etc., etc., etc. I'm not sure which tool actually got rid of the ASK toolbar.

It works on XP? I was under the impression that that it didn't.

IIRC, you can't install new versions directly. If you visit the download page in IE, it will detect the older OS and give you some old version to install. When you've installed that, it will update itself to the latest version.
