I'm getting set up on live over xmas (finally) and basically was wondering whats the best way of going about it. Im currently running two pc's, one downstairs connected directly to the cable modem through the ethernet port on my mobo and my second pc which is upstairs is connected to the downstairs one through a network card and crossover cable. Had it this way for years and happy with the way it works, what im wondering is, instead of forking out for a router or something could i get a second network card and run a length of ethernet cable from the host PC to the Xbox? Would this work?

Cheers

Sorry if i've not explained that to well.

A router isn't that expensive. Best to buy one for £40 and run 3 Ethernet cables from the router to PC1, PC2 and Xbox 360. You'll get the best performance that way. Last thing you want on XBL is lag.

Don't think the issue will be lag because i've been running an almost identical setup for years for PC gaming and the connection has always been lag free. Was just more a question of whether or not it would work as funds are a bit tight at the moment, just ordered a nice new Panasonic 42PZ80 screen and a Samsung 2253LW so funds are a bit tight, looking for a cheapo option.

Yes it will work. Ignore the guy talking about lag.

you could buy a network switch?

plug your cable modem into it using a standard ethernet cable, then connect your 2 pc's and xbox to the switch using standard ethernet cables as well.

i used to have mine set up like this when my router was plugged into a switch and then my pc and xbox were connected to the switch as well. worked well.
