Hi all,

I'm getting Sky Fibre next Thursday and I'm trying to work out what to do with regard to wiring in my house.

The max speed I can get at the moment is 34MB.

If I can I'd like to use WiFi/Homeplugs but I have always been a fan of wired ethernet and I'm wondering if WiFi/Homeplugs would come anywhere close to the performance of wired ethernet bearing in mind my maximum down speed?

Thanks all!

When I went from 2Mbps ADSL to 40Mb fibre my 802.11g did limit things - I got about 22Mbps download instead of the full 38 or so. I just got an 11n network card (router was already 11n) and now the wireless is faster than the 40Mb service.

Remember that the 34 figure you quote will be megaBITS not megaBYTES so 34Mb=4.25MB/sec. In my house I get the following:-

11n wireless = 5-7MB/sec
500Mb homeplugs = 8MB/sec
Gigabit ethernet = 110MB/sec!

No need for cat 6 at the moment, but if you're laying cable, then might as well future proof with cat6

Always wired, or if you are in a case like me where the router is too far and don't fancy hiding a 30m cable under the carpets then Homeplugs, Been using them for 2 years and have had 0 problems with them, also speed in my case hasn't suffered either.

cable if you can do it neatly or get away with it ghetto style followed by homeplugs when the Mrs objects to wires everywhere I only use wi-fi for mobile kit like phones and laptops.

Look up 'd line trunking' then do a very neat looking skirting board version and one that runs down the corner of your rooms, paintable and very sleek looking.

May seem expensive, but it's better than spending money on high end wireless gear which won't do the same job.

I also have wired route and needed the downstairs connected up and have Billion Home Plugs this is what the stats from the billion web page say;

Device Transfer rate Receive rate
1 88 Mbps 88 Mbps
2 87 Mbps 98 Mbps

to get them figures I had to individually update each unit with the latest firmware
I do have have four in total one has wireless N.

Kenneth.
