Getting stuck at WindowsXP welcome screen

Just of recent I've been running into a problem where I get stuck at the welcome screen of WindowsXP (sp3) I enter my password and it says loading personal settings or something or rather and just hangs there.

PC is

Q6600
Gigabyte P35C-DS3R
2GB Geil 800mhz
Geforce 8800GT

Best way of me getting round it so far is to reset cmos or load fail safe and go back to 2.4ghz 9x266 or whatever it is.

Perhaps I could go about removing my windowsXP password and letting it go straight through the welcome screen without prompting for one? Still a possibility it could hang there though I guess.

I recently updated from F11 bios to F12 which was probably the biggest mistake I've made using an old version of @BIOS. I then mainly started to hit into this problem so got an old F10 revision from gigabyte and uninstalled old @BIOS and installed the latest version of which flashed the bios a lot quicker from F12 to F10 than that of F11 to F12 on the old @BIOS I had from about early 2008.

I'm not very good at troubleshooting but it still could well be a problem with a system file for e.g?

Will get my bootable WindowsXP disk back from my sister tomorrow and run recovery.

Thanks for any input,

Jamie

Does it get stuck every single time or only occassionaly ?
I would try startup in Safe mode and see if you can get in. From personal experience when it get's stuck at loading personal settings it could be your profile that is causing this, create a new account and login with that and see if there's any difference

It's very frustrating, happens like 95% of the time. Somethings being very stubborn. For instance I was on these forums everything in cmos as standard. I rebooted to disable all of the following: CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E), CPU Thermal Monitor 2(TM2), CPU EIST Function. As it clocks the CPU down to 6 multiplier and runs at 1.6ghz. I also changed the cpu fan to PWM and added +0.3v to my Geil ram as it's supposed to run @ 2.1v where as the motherboards default is 1.8v. Reboot and I get stuck on the welcome login screen.

I've now managed to get on @ 2.4ghz with my ram @ 2.1v and all the C1E TM2 EIST functions disabled.

I'm thinking of keeping my computer on 24/7 as this is becoming a pain in the ass. I could probably turn off now and turn on later to find I can't get past the login screen.

Just a quick update I've had my pc in windows since 20:23 (last post). But I only just noticed I haven't got any audio, not through my headphones or mp3 ones as a test. No issue with driver in device manager, can open x-fi audio console fine and change between game/entertainment mode and play mp3's fine but without any sound.

First time this has ever happened. I did recently uninstall my PAX drivers for x-fi, run driver sweeper, move x-fi down a pci slot and install creatives latest x-fi xtrememusic drivers due to a slight high pitched noise I was getting with the modified PAX drivers. This fixed the high pitched noise I was getting. Although during install of the X-fi into the slot below I did find it was a lot stiffer, more troublesome to put in. The original slot I was in would slot in easy.

Could this possibly have been the route to all my issues?

This is just getting worse by the second.

HAHAHA, audio issue was just the speaker settings in sound and audio devices. For some odd reason both my left and right's were turned to the minimum which was obviously muting. Running headphones in 2/2.1.

So far I've removed my password from User Accounts so it doesn't prompt me to do anything at the Welcome screen thus having a 100% success rate of getting into windows on boot up so far
