Getting stuff off a DVD

So the wife hands me her camcorder that records on the little 1.4gb discs and says, you know a lot about this stuff (ie anything electrical) I need to mail someone one of my clips

I load the software on the pc but when I try to use it it says "The disc in Drive H: cannot be used (format type unknown)". Mmm that's a bit of a bummer since you can view the suff no problem on the camera itself...but the disc can't be read by the supplied software when it's connected to a pc

I find another bit of supplied software that apparently copies stuff direct from the disc to the hdd, but it says "Incorrect disc is inserted in the DVD drive. Insert UDF2.0 Format DVD-RAM disc". I can't see how it can be a format problem since you can guarantee that my wife's done nothing fancy...just shoved the disc in and started recording

Help - I don't even know where to start looking - I know a lot of software supplied with cameras etc is more than a bit flaky.

Anybody got any suggestions as to how I can get this stuff off the disc and onto my hard drive?

It's a Hitachi DZ-GX-MV750E and uses some software called DVD-MovieAlbumSE. The copying software is called VRCopy

Just dropped it into my DVD drive and explorer goes into "Not Responding"

TIA

jdickerson - you're right (p132 of a 176 page A5 manual - no wonder I couldn't find it myself) - cheers, much appreciated :)

There must be some technical reason but it seems mad to me that at any stage you can't just shove the disc in your dvd drive....the camera doesn't seem to have a problem with displaying clips from unfinalised dvds

I am always right... oh no wait.... no I'm not :D

It is stupid to be honest, but that's the way they work... which is probably why they haven't caught on....

Well regardless, I'm still waiting for my tip ;) Paypal is awaiting :P
[edit- kidding incase you're scared]

When they first came out I coulnd't wait to get one.. decided against it for some reason. 50//50 whether I regret it as they are quite nifty.

Well it plays ok in my DVD drive but I can't transfer it over to my hd because of a cyclic redundancy error check (!)...anyone know how I can copy and ignore one of those?

Try cleaning the disk...

If that doesn't work you're kinda screwed.... you could try adding the files on the disk to a rar file (with winrar) and telling it to ignore errors?
