Getting upgrade W8 onto new build

Hi there, I am planning on building a computer in the next week or so, I have a broken laptop with a vista key on it (not sure where the disc is but possibly could borrow one) and a very old desktop with an xp code and disc.

From what I gather from the numerous threads, it sounds like I will need to install an old copy of windows vista or xp before upgrading to W8 - do you think I will run into any issues installing XP onto a new ivybridge PC? (Particularly as I want 64 bit and my other licences are 32)
Also, if go for the upgrade route, will this cause issues if I wish to reinstall windows?

Sorry if this has been answered somewhere else, I have read through some topics and can't get my head around what my best course of action would be, any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I got the upgrade for £15 and you don't need to install an old version of windows. Once downloaded you get an option to turn the download into an ISO. Burn this and install like you would any other windows. I did mine tonight, I booted from the ISO, formatted and installed fresh.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links to where you can get the info but essentially you need to install fresh after downloading the ISO and burning it, then simply install as voorhees says, if there's any problems registering the key simply google it and you'll get the solution.

I didn't want to keep any guff from windows 7 so I did a full format/reinstall using an upgrade disk then a couple of elevated command prompt commands later and job done. I'm not sure why MS seem to want a pre-existing OS, they above everyone else should know how much we like clean HDDS!
