Right i have had my steam set to auto login for years and it still works fine

I tried to buy a game and see that i need to verify my email address...fine. But it sits there and doesn't work. So i try to log into the steam website with my details and can't get in..ok maybe i forgot my password since it was about 5 years ago since i last typed it in. So i try to recover the password. Now they say my email address isn't attached to any account! Even though i can clearly see that email address in the steam application and it says unverified

What can I do to sort this?

Er, you don't mean steam support do you? Thats a completely seperate account to steam so logging in obviously won't work.

As for verification... sounds like you're doing it wrong ><

had a look at the support site and didn't see anything similar to what is happening so thought i would see if anybody here has had similar problem before waiting for them to try and sort something which might be easily fixable

But first could you rephrase the OP so we know what you actually want...

It makes very little sense for actually figuring out what your problem is.

From what I understand, you forgot your password and steam isn't sending your password recovery email. So either your email account has expired. You're typing in the wrong username. Or you're trying to log in to steam support with a steam account...

What steps are you actually taking to retrieve your account?

Presumably you know the account name to type in, and you've tried claiming it back that way rather than with your email address?

It says "unverified" which means you have never done the manual "verify email address" process. I don't know if you'll be able to do that with your current situation (there is a verify email button somewhere in steam settings).

Try it, though, and if it doesn't work, you'll have to contact steam support. The steam support site uses different login details to your steam account (this is a good thing - otherwise if you got hacked, the hacker would be able to disable your access to steam support), so you'll have to register there first.
