I have music , pictures and videos all in my documents dir on my pc and the ps3 finds the pictures and music from the pc but not the video's.
The vids are downloaded from the ps3 store mp4 and I thought I would put them onto my pc to save space on the hd/ps3 but it won't find them to stream.
What i'm I doing wrong? this is the way I do it with the xbox360.

More details needed. Which program are you using to stream from the PC? Also if the video is not working and is on PSN, which one is it (so someone can test for you).

I am guessing you are using WMP11 which I have setup (although it's disabled atm) so can do tests if you want, depending on how good Newsnight is on bbc2 in 5 mins).

I have win xp pro which wmp11 is installed within. The videos play fine direct on the ps3 hd but the ps3 won't find them once they are on the pc hd. The videos are trailers like avp2 ect which are from the playstation store.
It finds my mp3 and pictures fine through the network but not the videos.
Like the 360 I usually browse the video dir of the pc from the console and it finds and plays the videos but not this ps3?

You got WMP11 sharing the video folder? Are you selecting the video option on the ps3 then finding your pc and the folder?

I made a ps3 folder on my pc and shared it on WMP11 then i just put all i want to play on the ps3 in there.

Hi,

OK I have a similar setup (xp pro +wmp11).

My "My Videos" folder on the PC has an mp4 file I created with my Sony phone that plays natively on the ps3, however it does not show up via streaming from wmp11. So I think you may be right. tbh I put the file in there but never tested it as pictures and music worked OK. I will download the file you mentioned, and transfer a couple of other files that play natively on the PS3 and move them to "My Videos" on the PC.

Ok an update.

"My Videos" folder now contains:

2 xvid files downloaded from internet
1 mp4 file from my k850i
1 mp4 avp requiem trailer from PSN
1 mp4 gt5 trailer from PSN

Now as soon as I moved the xvids into that folder they showed in WMP11 (whereas the file from k850i already in that folder would not show in WMP11 video library). I also added the 2 PSN filees to the folder and they do not show in WMP11. My understanding is that unless they show in WMP11 first they won't show on the ps3.

A quick google shows that their is some sort of problem with WMP11. It will play back mp4 files natively (if you open them) but it won't show them in it's library, so would not show on the ps3 as a result.

I have not read it fully, but looks like some patching of windows etc has been done by those 2 articles (to make the mp4 container viewable in WMP11 library).

HOWEVER, the 2 pages imply it is a problem to the 360 as well as ps3. As you only have this issue on ps3, it may not be the same issue as you have (although displaying similar symptoms).

Quick way to check (I think) is go to video library in WMP11 and see if you can see the files in there, that don't show on ps3.

Edit: info came from googling "ps3 wmp11 videos mp4" but I have not read the full details of either fix. If you don't know much about computers/windows etc do not be making any of the changes listed in those articles, and deffo don't be coming my way if you do :)

I thought Xvid will only play on a PS3 if you copy them to the Hard disk first? You can copy the file over the network then watch it, but not stream it, at least thats what Sony says in the manual.

Cheers mate for all the help, I will look into it more tomorrow when I have more time. The mp4 files do not show up in the library of wmp11 but I have the new avi of prison break which shows and that streams from pc to ps3 no problem so it must just be the mp4 files as you say.

Ok, against my better nature (I have no interest in streaming mp4s etc from my PC to ps3 or 360) I have fixed the problem.

summary:

1) Turn off WMP11 sharing
2) Deleted existing wmp11 library database from c:\documenst and settings\user\localsettings\...blah\media player (see a few posts up for exact details).
3)imported the reg file.
4) open WMP11 enabled sharing again and this time more videos appeared

Now it all streams as you wanted.

Only unwanted side effect (which I could have avoided by editting the reg file) was that it lost file the association for .mp4 files to media player classic on my system which I restored manually.

Edit: All the fix does is allow WMP11 to recognise the mp4 container (the actual codecs vary). I wonder if someone could just do something similarly funky that would allow you to get WMP11 to properly recognise the mkv container.
