Getting Windows to read OSX Drives

Hey guys,

This may be the wrong forum but I think that the people in this forum will have encountered this before.

Basically, I've gotten rid of the Mac Pro now and the hard drives from it I have moved into the new server.

To get the server to read them I've installed a bit of software called 'MacDrive'

And it now looks like this...

It's technically doing exactly what I want...however I keep getting this...

So, basically my options are:

1) Shell out for MacDrive
2) Find an alternative

I'm angling to option 2 because I don't like the idea of paying a license to access my own files.

So, has anyone found an alternative, I just want to be able to access my hard drives like I would any other disk. Eventually I'll be able to do some juggling of data and move everything off of it, reformat it as NTFS and then move it back...but that's a month away yet.

So, any suggestions for a solution to my issue? :)

Thanks!
Jake

I think there is a driver in the bootcamp drivers that lets you read and write to osx formatted drive (I think).

If you have a snow leopard disc that's the simplest way to find it, if not there are a few downloads of it on the apple site somewhere.

Ooooh that's worth a shout, and how would you go about adding this driver, would it be somewhere in device manager? :)

To get it to work on my pc (was doing some data transfers from my old time machine disc) I just ran the bootcamp installer till it worked, same for the keyboard driver as well.

I think you should be able to unpack the right driver from the cd but I think I encountered a problem trying to tell the installer it was a mac (when it wasn't) so using the bootcamp installer (for windows) was the best way round.

It's been a while since I sorted this out.

BTW if/once I've figured it out I'll write a guide for anyone else that's interested.

Nice one, I'll try that when I get home :)

It'll tide me over till I buy more HDD's at the end of the month then juggle it about.

Aren't there certain limitations on the practicality of this? Various OS X apps only work on HFS+ and likewise on Windows?

Yes you can have some issues with applications. From firsthand experience iTunes in OS X (permission related), and Steam in Windows (case sensitivity) have quirks when using exFAT to storing their files. So I have a USB 3.0 drive with HFS+ for my music and NTFS for games.
But if it's just for storage and not fles directly related to a fussy application then no problem.

Hmm, I've found it can now access them. However my Server randomly reboots! Very odd!

Can I refer the honourable gentleman to:

DISCLAIMER: Playing with storage drivers can cause you pain if you get it wrong/don’t know what you’re doing. I’ll accept no blame for you messing up your system, so please make sure you have backups.

:D To be fair I've used this is on loads of machines and it's been fine - not tried on a server OS though? It's easily enough to remove.

It's not a problem, I'm borrowing a hard drive from a friend tomorrow so I'll copy everything off, format it to NTFS, then copy it all back :D
