I was wondering if you need to do anything special to get the images / photos on your website index on google images? Or will google take care of this all automatically? I've jsut spent the last hour giving an alt to everyone of the photos on my website. I presume alt text helps as keywords?

Alt text does indeed help.

Google has it's own bot that crawls for it's image index. I would imagine it uses similar technology to it's sister bot(s) and indexes images that appear to be relevant to the content.

Optimising for Google Images is a tricky thing indeed but there are recommended guidelines to assist getting rank for them.

  • Concise alt attributes
  • Descriptive image filenames
  • Surrounding associative text
  • Domain and/or descriptive directory
Not much more you can do. Linking directly to the images with a keyphrase is being tested by some people and it makes sense that this is an effective method as Google Search uses this as a primary means of ranking sites. It certainly won't hurt rank so maybe worth considering.

googlebot and msn have run amok inside one of my galleries and indexed everything. (powered by gallery2)

took them a while to bite. (2 months)
