So, she wants to put together her first computer, mainly will be used to play her games, so needs decentish graphics, obviously, with the budget can not be at ultra settings. The 400 quid is excluding monitor.

gonna be tight buddy, may i suggest looking to second hand parts and only buying new bits if essential as you'll get a far better performing machine that way.

Tried and I cannot do it. Not a gaming PC that's decent. Unless you can give her an old HD, mouse and keyboard I have something put together for £380.

Best could come up with

Right these are estimates for second hand products but i shouldn't be too far off the mark.

q6600 ~ £80
cheap p45 ~ £40
4 gig ddr2 800mhz (bon't bother with the 1066 stuff too much of a premium on it) ~ £45
500w PSU ~ £50
4850/70 ~ £45/£70
1tb HD ~ £45
Optical drive ~ £10
this case new ~ £27

that's £367 with the 4870 you may need to allow for a cooler as well and maybe some fans but should be a good rig. Get yourself on MM mate.

You'll be surprised at how bitchy WoW can get on one's system, especially smack bang in a raid with tons going on onscreen. Something like a 4870 or 260 (whichever allegiance you pledge) would do well in WoW. 4 gig RAM would go a long way too.

Think I agree with the 2nd hand Q6600 option in this case, no chance you'll get a half decent £400 gaming rig buying everything new.

A bit over budget but if some of the components can be picked up 2nd hand then it will be a decent machine. If the graphics are a worry then I would go for a triple core athlon (ocuk dont sell them) or even dual and spend the money saved on better graphics.

Not bad, I'd look for a Samsung F3 over the F1 model though. IIRC WoW seems to prefer Nvidia cards so you might want to look for a 9800 GT(X) or a GTS 250.

This, except swap the 4850 out for a 9800GT / GTX or a GTS250 if you can stretch :)

If you cant, swap out the X4 for an X3 - might even unlock to a X4

Dont go LGA775 what ever you do.
Its been a dead socket for a year or so!

AM3 will last a fair few years to come, is newer tech, and Id say a fair bit better :p

but on such a small budget, i wouldn't really worry about upgradability, just get the best you can with the money.

plus theres no guarntee that a socket will last a few years, AMD could turn around and release a new socket at some point.

no one knows what amd will be doing in 2 or 3 years
