GF 9800 GX2 hardware requirements

Hi,

Been trying to catch up on gpu developments that have happened over the last few years in preparation for a new system, to work out what the best card/setup to go for. When i came across the 9800 GX2.

Now for the moment its out of my price range, but what interests me about this card is that although internally its based on sli, I assume it does not require specific hardware, such as a SLI enable motherboard. Is that correct?

Basically i'm thinking of going for a 8800 GT or 8800 GTS (512) now and then later should I need the extra power upgrade to one of these or whatever the latest model is at the time.

Are there any hardware requirements i should be aware of, apart from having an adequate PSU along with both 6 and 8 pin connectors? Specifically i'm currently tempted with this OCuk system (although would prefer a GTS). Is there anything in that system that would prevent me from using a GX2 card?

Is the GX2 always a part of a series? The only other one i remmber reading about was for the 7000 series. Does that mean this is something that nvidia just toy's with from time to time, or can it be relied on (as much as you can rely on anything) to always be a part of nvidias product line?

Finally is GX2 (and i guess sli in general) really worth it for anything other than 'specific' games? Games appear to be the only time i've seen it mentioned and profiled, but does it work with 3d applications for example?

thx

Wait till mid june. Lots of new highend cards are coming out. So decide which card you want then.

On the 9800GX2 front. It has SLI inbuilt so no need for a nvidia chipset board. Just need a power supply with 2x6pin connectors really.
