Ok a common problem I know but I have to ask here to the pros

I'm currently running Vista SP1 x64 I have .Net framework fully up to date. C++ redis up to date. Graphics drivers up to date. Chipset up to date. My HDD has recently just been re-formatted and re-installed Vista x64.

My problem I bought the dirty flithy cheap as chips GTA IV for 9.99 yday. Now I noticed before hand that apprently I need Games for windows live client installed to get the rockstar social club thingy to work.

(I tried installing GTA on its own. It didnt work died a horrible death and thus I uninstalled it and removed all traces that it ever exisited)

So I thought I shall start from the start. I'l install Games for windows live client and check that works. So I pop along to the wonderful windows website and download the latest gfwl client 2.0. I install it all goes well.

I then click to open the client and it just comes up with the evil EVIL error message from windows saying "gfwl has encounter a problem and will now close  . Thats it... no reason as to why or anything. :(

I am at a loss I have browsed google and tried a few methods and still no luck. One of the main probs while looking for a solution is that a lot of people was refering to XP SP3 or a x32 ver of windows.

I was hoping anyone might have some info or ways you got around this.

I don't recall having to download gfwl seperately, thought it was install along with everything else then it updates itself.

GTA4 installation is horrible all the same :/

I wouldn't bother, unless you plan to play online or collect the 'strange' goodies.
The [cough] executable works just fine with the original install.
You don't have to bother with the unsocial club at all, just skip the login and proceed.

The prob I get tho is even when I try to use the .exe in the GTAIV folder it just trys to boot the social club thing and that just comes up with the same error.

Except of course it says "RGSC has encounter a problem and will now close" So I figured this was maybe a gfwl not letting RGSC boot ? I could be wrong here ofc.

Is there like a set way I should install stuff to get this to work ? I just want to play some GTAIV :p

So many links on google just say re-install windows. I just dont see what good that will do tbh. I dont really want to re-install windows either tbh.

I remember when I installed it and then ran the game it said I needed an update and there was a link on GTA's website. I used that and all was fine.

I'd simply remove everything that the game installed and start again and follow it through rather than downloading the components seperately.

orginally I did.

I just installed the game. tried to open it and Rockstar social club just wouldnt open at all. Then I noticed there was an update for both GTA and the club client. So I d/led them both. updated them both. Still get the same problem.

So I uninstalled everything. Installed GTA, then installed .Net framework, then updated both GTA and social club. still didnt work.

I then Un-installed everything again. Did the same order but updated the gfwl at the end as well. Still doesnt work.

I'm really at a loss I just dont understand why it will not boot either gfwl or rgsc. because it cannot boot either of them it will not let me play GTA :(

I guess no one has any info on this then ? :(

Back to google for some more fun I guess..... man even at 9.99 this is looking like more hassle than it will be worth
