GFX Card Dilemma

So i bought a 7970 matrix plat to replace my GTX 480 and im really underwhelmed by slight improvements it offers.

im sending the 7870 back as it has some issues and right now im not sure if i want to get another 7870 or a 280x to replace it.

i played all the same games that i was playing with the GTX 480 and frankly it under performs in some games compared to the 480.

I play a lot of black ops 2 and both cards run the game at around 170-200 fps but the 7970 is no where near as smooth as the 480 was.

now that i have already sold my 480 (for £110) and the 7970 is going back on monday, i dont know how long i can wait without a gfx card. so im actually waiting for 290 + x pricing and release and hope to buy a 780 gtx if the price drops.

although i prefer nvidia over AMD, im not one to buy a product purely for brand loyalty, which is why i bought the 7970 in the first place. i was actually wanting the 770gtx initially.

so my question is, basically, has anyone else experienced a similar thing or is it down to my system or the card itself?

my system:

Asus Z77 Sabertooth
Intel Core i7 3770 @ 4.6ghz
16 GB samsung green DDR3
120GB vortex 3 SSD
Asus Xonar DSX sound card
Thermaltake 750 watt PSU
big massive and very cool (as in cold) Corsair 600 T case

ay? I had a 480gtx and a single one of my 670's stomped all over it ( and a 7970 platinum is faster)

Well, I've just come from a GTX570 SOC to the same 7970 as you, and the boost in fps has been quite dramatic, though I do tend to find that Nvidia tend to be just a little bit smoother overall. However, that said, all games have been good in that regard so far. I'm very pleased with my upgrade.

OP- did you do a complete driver removal before installing your card and drivers? Driver Sweeper would he a good choice once you've uninstalled em.

This has been known to cause this issue.

yes. this caused plenty of crap when i initially installed the card. but i have since done a fresh install of windows 8.1 and that issue has gone away.

one thing i havent mentioned is the actual quality of the visuals. for example on Blops 2 some circles are not perfect circles and things take longer to load and games that rely on physx look terrible, namely the batman games

as i said, maybe my card is faulty

Well games that rely on Phys will have a disadvantage on AMD cards, but still a 7970 Matrix platinum should be hugely quicker than a 480. Something is not right. have you trtied synthetic benchmarks? See if you are getting the correct sort of scores.

On the 28th there should be 770/780 and other NVidia card deals, so you might want to wait till then and think about it. I myself will probably get a 770 now that the 7970 was a total failure for me.

You sure the scaling options are set correctly in CCC? Long shot, but worth asking :)

As for PhsyX, do you mean it looks terrible without it, or do you mean that running it with PhysX enabled looks terrible?
If it's the former, then 'terrible' is a bit strong as it just looks a touch more sparse if anything.
If it's the latter, then the answer is obvious :)

Bought the 7970MP which was on a deal last weekend and probably was one of the very few or maybe even then only one, who got a completely screwed up card, couldn't OC it at all, everything resulted in artefacts and few days after, it started getting artefacts and white flashing lines in games while the card was at stock. I might be the only one who got this kinda crap, but just saying.

That's unfortunate. I wouldn't think that it's reason enough to dump the 7970's entirely though :)

Might not be, but after fighting with it for 3 days, and after I got a bunch of crap in EuroTruck SM 2, which I use to chill out from all the bs pretty much, had a huge white line across the screen and different drivers didn't fix the problem, it totally got to me :D

this is pretty much what im thinking of doing

Fair enough :)

Can I just ask this again though?

If you're really set on a 780, then the price on the gainward phantom is, as a 780 goes, not bad. I should imagine that it will be a very quiet performer. :)

As a few has mentioned the 780ti release, ill say, even if you aren't interested in it, it is worth the wait. Might save a couple of quid after prices are adjusted. AMDs major release round the corner aimed at the 780 price bracket, should help too.
