Gfx card drivers and icons

This is a complete hate i have and want to know if there is a way around it.
My icons on the desktop are all nice and tidy and where I need them, you install new GFX card drivers and they all move and you need to sort them in order again, this is a real pain if you have lots of icons.

is there a way to stop the icons moving during driver updates ?
this would make my day if it was poss

this also happens when you switch resolutions, which is very annoying indeed too. i do this all the time testing websites at various resolutions, then switching back to 2560x1600 and everything is stacked up in a horrible pile afterwards.

i do believe there is a freeware program out there that is supposed to "save" your icon layout and allow you to "load" it again whenever you want. but i tried it (under vista 64) and it didn't work. it might well have been updated for win7 and other OS but who knows. and i can't remember the name of it now. if it pops back into my head i'll post back.
