How do you know when its about to give out? ive had problems with it spinning at 50% for awhile and use mis afterburner to set it down to 24% at idle, but its starting to make funny noises when it spins up

I would definitely consider replacing your fan. Although it's quite odd for a 5870, I would have thought the fan specs would last a lot longer. But it might be indeed a good idea for you to get an after market fan, better safe than sorry.

If you have not done this yet consider taking out the fan and giving it a good clean; with air not water obviously; a lot of dust and dirt can build up; just be sure to put everything back on properly. The safer option is just really blow it without taking off the fan and seeing if that helps
