Hello,

Im actually posting for someone else as they cant get on.

Problem:
He is running a 6800Ultra at the moment and has been for about a year now and has never had any problems. But recently every time he goes to play a game or even run 3dmark the system hangs and has to reboot. Its seems to be fine when not playing games. Not sure what could be wrong with it, all i know is its NOT overheating.

Anyone take a guess to what has happened to card and is it fixable?

Thanks for any help.

is the card overclocked at all?
Have any of the drivers been updated recently?

Additional system infor may help, like PSU, motherboard, processor..

Nope, no overclocking at all. Has been same system hes had for along time now and has been fine up till now.

AMD64 4000+
2GB Geil Dual Channel
Abit 3rd eYe MOBO
NVIDIA 6800ultra(AGP)
500W psu JeanTech

Hes tried a few drivers ranging from old to new. still gets same result.

Could be the PSU. Can you try another?

Check the event log to, see if you get any errors there when it happens.

may be that the PSU is giving up! but that model and power should be reliable enough...

It does smell of sudden failure in the system somewhere if all was well and now it's not...

Sounds as if its just given up the ghost then... :(

R.I.P 6800

p.s. have you tried unplugging anything else you dont need, so the power draw is less, just for the sake of trying.

:( yeh tried it with just the basics, 1HD, mobo etc. still same result.

The gfx card isnt even that old so pretty dissapointed that its life has been cut short lol :( He even stripped it down and cleaned heatsink and fans etc still to no luck.

What you think has happened to it anyways? can the chip or pipelines or somthing on gfx card just suddenly go without warning ? is it a comon thing to happen?

Cheers for the help.

Maybe someting burnt out or just failed. Surely its still under warranty.

I'm assuming you checked it for signs of actual damange / burnt areas since you cleaned it up and reapplyed the compound etc...

If your buddie ends up replacing it, the x1800 is a bargain right now, but i'm sure you knew that to... ;)

From what you say it sure sounds like a heat issue, but if you are definate it's not that, then unfortunately it sounds borked.. Sometimes stuff gives up the ghost, and usually it's only after spending 2 days banging your head on a wall do you realise this! The only thing I'd suggest is trying it in another system just to be sure.. if it's still got the problem it's rma time :(

Read back up dude, he's tried that (no offence just pointing it out ;) ).

The only other thing is perhaps memory or heat, and since we're sure its not that then perhaps memory, but that would indicate memory in both machines not working.

I'd assume from whats been said though, the other machine is functioning working PC, so that also rules that out for me.

After few days of just thinking his card was knackared he bought a £8 PCI card and flashed his gfx card bios and what you know, it dosent crash anymore. :D How weird is that.
