Hi all. I received my new card today, a Asus HD 7970 Matrix Platinum. So chuffed to bits I removed my old faithful 6950 and put the new card in and....nothing. it's as if the system is suddenly dead and i cannot turn it on, yet power is going through it as the usb light strip still lights up.

hmmmmm. My reasoning is that my psu may not have the necessary juice to power up.

XFX modular 700w psu
Intel I7 (1366)
asus sabertooth x58 mobo
12gb ddr3
x3 hard drives + 1 ssd

Before I start stripping the system down I was hoping for a second opinion on whether it would be down to a lack of power, or it being a DOA card.

700W PSU should be plenty.

I'd just double check the wires and the connection to the motherboard first in case it's accidentally came loose or something.

Do you get a signal to your monitor? Are you able to get into the BIOs ? :)

When you say you can't turn it on, is that when you push the power button and noting happens?

That psu could easily power 2 of those cards, i doubt its the psu thats the problem, double check the connections and make sure everything is seated correctly, try pitting your old card back in and see what happens.

Are you using the latest bios for your motherboard?

In the past I had to update motherboard bios to get new video cards to work.

nope no new BIOS, wires seem solid. seems odd as i was using it this morning fine. all i did was take the card out and put the new one in.

When you say you can't turn it on, is that when you push the power button and noting happens?

yep :) dead as a rock.

going to try another psu from a friend see if that makes any difference.

this is what happens when I am out of the hardware loop for a few years :D

yes got an adaptor with the card that turned a 6 pin to an 8 pin.

Just disconnected the two 8-pin power leads from the card and turned power on and the system started to boot and the card lit up. shut down and put the 8-pins back in and back to dead pc.

just put a new adapter i had spare and above where the power cables plug in i have one green light and one red light. I will assume both need to be green but will have to check to be certain.

You need to feed tons of power to a beast of a video card like this,
so ASUS equipped the card with two 8-pin PCIe power connectors. Assuming
the card can pull the proper 150W from the PCI Express 3.0 slot and
each of the 8-pin power connectors it means that this card has 450W of
power going to it. Due to this ASUS suggests a 650W power supply with a
+12V current rating of 42A for proper operation of the entire PC. ASUS has a pair of LED lights under each PCIe power connector. These two

LED lights are a form of quick diagnostic for issues when connecting
power to the video card. Depending on the presence or lack of presence
of power connections ( or secure fitting ) the card will display an LED -
RED or Green. Green meaning power connections are correct and Red
meaning power connections are not.

so with 1 red light i have a problem getting power to one of the 8-pins. time to dig deep.

Aha problem solved! turns out there was a crack in the casing of the original 8-pin adapter and it must not have been able to make a full connection. At 1st my spare one didnt work either but after practically jamming it in it seems to have made the connection and now both lights and green and I am about to install drivers and give it a test run :)

Happy days.

Thanks for your advice guys, I wasnt far off buying a new psu for nothing it seems.

also, as a last question. can anyone recommend a good benchmarking tool to test this card out thoroughly ?

Best benchmark is games. Run fraps and ideally every game should not drop beyond 60fps. Clock it to the max and enjoy. Benchmarking isn't gaming. If you get your licks from benchmarking it's all over :-P

lol true i am more into gaming, I thought a benchmark too l could put it through its paces better than modern games with the advanced effects. :)

Hi DisrupTor75
My Asus HD 7970 Matrix Platinum arrived today. Was your card loud? it seem like everytime games get loaded the fan speed would go crazy loud. Only time its on silent is when I'm on the main menu or loading.

Didnt get any reply on my original post but game was having bad jerky gameplay on all games, you come across any?

if your card seems loud just double check what temps it is running at too. If it is overheating fans will be max to try to cool it (i am sure i saw someone mention a screw loose somewhere)
