Hi Guys

Looking for a gfx card after being out of the game for 4 years. Just built a rig with i5 3570k 8gb corsair 1866mhz and a sabertooth z77 with ssd.

I now need a gfx card that will play ( all be it not at the highest res ) most modern games and I looking to spend about £250
I'm what you would call an occasional gamer that like it to look good :):D

What should I get ?? cheers

Not many people on here will recommend anything other than a 7950 at this point.

Gigabyte windforce would be my choice, cannot link to shop as on my phone but just look under amd gpus you'll find it

What resolution do you play?

Strictly speaking the 7950 is the best card you can get for your budget but depending on your answer it may be overkill.

:)

I'd be wanting to play @1080p ( wouldn't everyone ) :)

Had a look at the 7950 and it looks the mutts - I guess at this price range and not a hardcore gamer NVidia is not in the running.

What about 3D ? I have a benq xl2411t will I be able to use the 3d with the 7950?

Whats overkill for today may be totally inadequate for tomorrow, its false economy to suggest the guy a card that only just match his needs if he has the budget to buy a decent card now, he might as well buy the best he can afford as the rest of his equipment will not be holding him back

Nope. That monitor only works with nVidia 3D so if you did want to use this feature you're locked to nVidia cards.

Nothing wrong at all with the 600 series from them (I previously had two 680s) it's just with exception to the GTX660 and 670 they're overpriced for the performance they offer.

If you could save a little more and get a 670 this would be your best all round option. The best your money can buy is a 660Ti which performs on par or worse with AA applied than a £180 7870 to give you some context.

Ah with that monitor you may want to get a Nvidia card as i am pretty sure AMD cards will have problems running the 3D(could be wrong), in that case spend a bit extra and get one of these http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-039-PV&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=2294

I'm not opposed to spending a little more and I was not aware that my monitor locks me to NVidia.

I like the look of the 670 would a 660ti be a cheaper option or am I loosing a lot ?

670 is comparable in performance terms to a 7950

660Ti is comparable to a 7870.

With overclocking you're able to get above and beyond stock 680 performance with a 670. A 660Ti can match only stock 670 performance while overclocked really making it not very good value for money overall.

e.g.

Stock:

660Ti = 90%
670 = 100%
680 = 105%

Overclocked:

660Ti = 95%
670 = 110%
680 = 115%

The figures could change if you get a good/bad clocker but gives you an idea at least.

If I was in your position I'd get a 670.

A couple of AA batteries will do :p

You won't need anything special as even the corsair hx520W PSU's are fine for a 670 and 3570k overclocked.
