Sure this has been covered before but ive done a search and cant find the answers i need the most.

I have a 27' iMac next to my PC which i had plans to use it as a monitor. I have done some research and i know you can use it with the exception the GPU will have a Display Port out.

Question is, has or is anybody using this set up at the moment. Im looking for a GFX card which will play my games on close to Max settings on the big resolution it has.

Thanks guys, sorry if im being naive here.

Which iMac? If it's the thunderbolt then you won't be able to use it with mini display output, it will only work from a thunderbolt source

It's the late 2009 one mate. No thunderbolt port just mini display port.

I was under the exception that of the gfx card hard display port it would work. Going to be gutted if I can't do it

Ohh so back to my problem. I like the look of the GTX 680. But then theres this which screams out to me. Look at the resolution.

Help lol.

You may find that non of the listed cards above will not work in any Apple Mac. You will need to find a retailer that sells the cards with Unix based Bios or go to Apple which is an expensive upgrade.

Errr ... :) He isn't installing a 680 GTX into his iMac (impossible feat) he is needing a Gfx card for his PC so he can use the iMac as a screen :D

But Phatzy does raise a point, there is no guarantee that the graphics card in your PC will work first time with the iMac, the inputs can be a bit temperamental.

Personally I'd go for a 7950 3Gb, should be more than enough for that resolution.

JoeF1,

What's the spec of your PC? Hopefully the components (ignoring the gpu of course) are not older than the 2009 iMac.

No worries mate, i have so far:

Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge)
MSI Z77A-G43 Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 MoBo
8GB Samsung Green

So far.

Currently using a 9800gt Hand-me-down.

Yesterday I had a Mini Display Port to Mini Display Port cable turn up.

Plugged my HD6870 into the back of my iMac and Windows came up in glorious 2560*1440.

I tried BF3 on this res, it worked on high but it was an empty server with nothing happening! Knocked it down to 1920*1080 and it is running nice.

Only downside is that the iMac is getting very hot, much hotter than normal usage but still well within safe margins.
