Hi, bit of an unusual question but the current motherboard I have (Intel) has an empty PCIE slot 1 then the GFX card goes in PCIE slot 2-4 and below on an ATX board that is normally orientated. This is different from the last board it replaced (X99) where the GFX goes in PCIE slot 1.

Is this the standard now as it works out great for me that the first PCIE slot as I can use it as a WC passthrough as my case is inverted - but I don't want to make some WC changes if in the future I buy a board where the GFX card starts in PCIE slot 1 - i.e. AMD?

Maybe to have better airflow/space around the ever increasing size of modern GPUs. I have a 4080 which is a bit of a beast but still on a 6-7 year old motherboard.

That's the only reason I can think of anyway.

There's quite a few boards with a smaller slot above the primary PCI-E, I actually quite like it because it is ideal for something like a wireless card, but the majority of boards still make the primary slot the first slot.
