I'm finally thinking of making the long overdue leap to PCI-E but am on quite a tight budget.

Do you think I'll see much of an improvement upgrading my 7800 GS+ 512MB AGP card to a 9600GT PCI-E?

should do mate i think it you will see roughly double the performance i have a 9600gt

after having a 7900gs 256mb then 7900gs sli

the 9600gt beat them both not so much in bench marks but in more recent games the difference was very noticable

maybe because of newer design more memory better pixel shader performance

200 people are going to tell you that forget the 9600GT and go for the 8800GTS 512MB, and they are right because you've got yourself a bargain, meaning a 9800GTX. You will also have severe headaches in the first dew minutes because the pictures will move too fast that your eyes can't catch up.

The 8800GTS is almost 50% more money and I'm on a tight budget.
As long as the 9600GT is a worthwhile improvement, matches a 3870XT and is just as cheap then I'll be happy.

9600 GT will be a huge boost in performance, and its faster than the 3870 XT in some when AA's applied. :)

Oh, LoadsaMoney also have some special vesions of ForceWare actually can make your new 9600GT just as fast as 8800GTS 512 :D He's the man you talk to in regard to anything nV drivers :p

Another possibility now is that I just get a 8800 GTS as I'veread these are compatible with my Asrock DualCore-VSTA.

I see that both the OcUK 320/640MB GTS cards require a 16x slot, but as far as I'm aware the motherboard only has a x4 PCI-E slot.

Does this mean theses cards are a no go (I know I may have answered my own question here :P)

Be-warned using that board, any of the G92/G94-based nVidia cards need to be flash-hacked to be able to run, due to the buggy VIA chipset it uses. Can only be done in a working PCI-e compatible motherboard too, blind-flashing doesn't work (fails to POST).

The plan was to get the best PCI-E card I can for this motherboard, then upgrade the motherboard and PSU the month after.

Just trying to weigh up my options, although if the 8800 320/640 models are really not as good as a 9600GT/3870XT I won't bother with that route.
