Hi guys, I've got a 1070 card in my rig at the moment, as title says what would be a good upgrade to play Starfield, are the Intel cards any good?

No real set budget but best bang for buck, only other games I regularly play are Warhammer Dawn of War, Euro & American Truck simulator and Witcher III

It depends on a few factors.

What resolution and refresh rate is your monitor?
What are your performance expectations? 60 FPS?
Do you have any Nvidia specific features that you absolutely can't live without?

The Intel Arc cards are decent performers (A770 typically on par with a 3060) but don't do well in older titles which may affect Dawn of War.

At 1440p or below the best bang for the buck at the moment is the 6700 XT at around £300. I don't feel like the 7800 XT is enough of a performance jump to justify £500+ and the current Nvidia offerings are overpriced and don't have enough VRAM.

Cheers, I have dual IPS monitors but only game at 1080p, not sure what my settings regarding fps so I would say that's not a huge factor, I'll take a look at the 6700 then as I definitely don't wanna lose out of Dawn of War as it's the game I play the most.

I'm not locked into Nvidia or AMD so I am happy using either

Starfield is horribly unoptimised/demanding but AMD cards do perform better in that game. The extra grunt and VRAM of the 6700 XT makes it a better upgrade that will last longer over something like an RX 6600 if you're coming from a 1070 and don't upgrade very often.

Thanks mate, I've just seen the 6700 XT includes Starfield as well which is a bonus, I have it on GamePass for Xbox but was thinking of playing on the PC as the missus gets upset if I take over the telly too much

You need rebar enabled to get good performance from Arc.

For 1080p, a 6700 XT is fine, maybe a 6800 non-XT if you can find a good deal.

4070 is coming down a bit now, but still looking at £500-£550 for either the 4070 or 7800 XT and they are overkill for your resolution.

Realistically what's your budget??

If you can stretch to a 7800 XT you'd get a level of future proofing if you ever wanted to move up to 1440p or 4k

Also what's your current spec of the rest of the PC? Starfield is quite demanding and I'd suggest having a least 32gb of Ram and a decent CPU to go with the new GPU!

Ryzen 7 3700X and 16Gb RAM, may look to upgrade my RAM then

Don't really have a budget but I'm not spending a lot on a graphics card (and other bits), if it's gonna be mega bucks I'll just sack it off and play it on my Xbox

Yes I'd say 16gb of Ram extra would be worthwhile. Have you considered a used card? If you're only interested in 1080p there are some strong cards out there for a decent price

@Maundie I wouldn't buy a GPU just for starfield or any one game. At some point you are going to move on and then your purchase may not have been the most sensible anymore. Decide on a budget and then find the card that gives the most bang for the buck in the majority of titles. If it's close then features not always available could sway you one way or another, such as RT support, upscaling FSR/DLSS/XeSS(AMD makes it possible to upscale in basically every game through the driver but FSR 1 is poop and HYPR-RX isn't available yet), productivity support and so on and so forth. Also worth taking a look at the driver features supported by each GPU manufacturer and how it functions, youtube can help you there with live demonstrations.

I can put a vote forward for a 6800 non xt

Absolutely stonking card and ploughs through everything I play at 3440x1440

To give context to starfield I am playing at above Res on ultra at 60fps solid no problem.

Cracking card and now available at good prices :)

I picked up a 6750xt last week (along with a 7600x and new SSD, mobo etc), it's been playing Starfield just fine at 1440p on Ultra

Good deals to be had if you shop around right now.

Was so tempted to go for one of the new 7____xt cards but it felt like the value for the 6____xt cards was better for Starfield and generally games from the last few years I haven't played.

Loads of good options are available for you right now, there's not one obvious card choice.
