I just got my hands on an Opteron/X2 heatpipe cooler off a fellow forum member, when I received it I had the feeling it would not fit, because I was not aware it was the newer revised version by AMD.

And in fact it took hell of a time and efforts for me to find the ONLY position that it would be mounted right, the base and fins area are huge I don't even have space to mount my beloved OCZ ramsinks on the ram chips. And guess what only zip ties/cable ties work, not even a slightest way to use screws.

Well, that's the only downside, the cooler works like a beast lol, and I'm happy with my purchase. For reference, stock X1950XT cooler kept temp at 81C under full load (mounting is fine with AS5, it's just a very hot card). The Opty cooler now does it at 60C !!! (a whopping 20C lower lol, and what's more, it's extremely silent albeit sporting a 70mm fan spinning at 3000rpm)

Some piccies :D

My friend with the 1st version of the cooler on an X1800XT inspired me. He got to use ramsinks as well, which in my case I can't.

Last but not least, TEMP !

Insane.

No heatsinks on the ram? Madness. Also in 2nd pic it looks like the pcb board is bending ever so slightly with all that weight. In time for long use i can see that bending more and probably breakin the card.

Cool mod tho but impractical in everyday usage i reckon.

I know that most of the x1800/x1900 cards had slightly bowed PCB, but are you sure that the cooler isnt making this worse? In your second picture, it looks like it's bendind the pcb towards the center

PCBs are tougher than you guys think  , in the pic it looks emphasized, in fact it's just a little bit beyond bending point since I could not use the 4 inner holes due to the base of the heatsink being too large, and when you use the outer holes then tighten the ties, the card is bound to get bent towards the center, but nowhere near braking lol :p

Since its zipties and all, I have to make sure the base is making perfect contact with the core by adjusting the toutness of each tie, did I mention "time and effort" in my OP :p ?

No ramsinks can be applied, which is a real shame, but I can do 720 core on 1.45v now, which could never be achieved with stock cooler. And my case's airflow is decent, so ram chips are having breezes over them, and I'm thinking of replacing the 70mm fan with a 80mm one, more air that way and ramchips will get cooled better too.

pcb is fine, its actually bending the opposite way which leads me to believe the heat sink if anything is acting to slightly straighten it lol :D

you may want to grab some BGA ram sinks for the ram though... there very cheap and just stick on.

surely if the card is being bent around the center point (which in any case should be right smack bang in the middle of the GPU) then its not making as good a contact with that area?!

20oC cooler though... its obviously doing something.

locutus: who said I don't have ramsinks? ;) Look how lonely they are now

[whisper] I blame your huge new version of the cooler :D [/whisper]

PS: to everyone else, the contact with the core is perfect, the PCB might be bending, but the core is NOT !!! :p

PS2: BINGO !!! velcro, fast installation and removal lol, I take it out about 10 times per day due to failed OC and need to remove battery for Cmos clearing ^^, so I can't afford using screws.Only Asus Commando has a nice battery position that doesn't need removing battery when clearing Cmos, and guess what? It has a Clear Cmos button too !

Them ramsinks if sanded down with a grinder or somit to half its height should fit on ** card, as in first pic it looks like enough room on the right side ones.

Not all 8 of them, and I don't want to do a half a$$ed job :p

Say, if I get to fit 4 of them, the other 4 are going on a strike due to discrimination.

I don't think the ram will fry without a heatsink on them, may as well though if you can. Oh and that heatsink is nothing compared to...

:D (I think it is a noctua 120 on there, not certain though)

Raikiri - let me get this straight - A Sythe Ninja on the CPU, okay, with you so far, is that a AC Freezer 7 Pro on the NorthBridge, and a Noctua NH-U12 on the graphics card???

:D Madness, but I love it.
