Hi

was the major orginally male or female? As it hints at that the major was male at a point. I really need a GITS expert to explain their answer.

Thanks

As far as I remember I agree.

You may want to check Missing Hearts episode in the 1st SAC series, (8?) ... events stir up memories about when the Major was first fully cyberised at age 9. Actually better, see episode 11 of the 2nd SAC series which gives background on how she was cyberised as a child following a plane crash.

In eps 11 it shows a boy and a girl after the plane crash, there is no reason for the major to be the girl and quite easy be the boy who was shipped out to war, and choice that body to remind him of the girl. In GITS, batou queries why the major choice female bodys over males' ones.

Does/have anyone read the comics?

There is a reason for the Major to be the girl ... it's all down to the cranes.

Don't the cranes mean the "Thousand origami cranes wish" where the maker of a thousand origami cranes get what ever wish they make? Japaneses sick people make then to wish for better heath? I still can't understand why the major can't be the boy in the story rather than the girl if its down to the cranes.

IIRC it's made fairly clear that the Major and the other character (who she meets up with again later) are the two children in the Hospital, and the other character is definitely male on both occasions :)

The boy is making the cranes and I think persuades the Major (as a little girl) to keep trying when she is about ready to give up getting used to her new body (hence why she gets the flashback/memories when she sees that old "body" with the cranes), as she got attached to the boy at the time as one of her few friends (I think it's mentioned that she spent time looking for him when she was older, before she joined Section 9).

It's been a while since I watched it though, but I've never had any doubts about the Major being female especially given Shirow's love of strong female leads (Gunsmith cats, Dominion Tank Police, Appleseed etc), and that's backed up by the fact that in the Manga she has a whole host of bodies she can use pretty much at will, but never uses a Male one from memory (so she's either very much Female. or the ultimate transgender person).

I've a got a feeling that there is a mention at some point of her using a male body but I don't think we ever see her in one ....

.... it has been a long time since I rewatched the GiTS series too ..
