I got myself a version of Acronis True Image 8 PE last year on the Personal Computer World magazine cover dvd. Keep an eye on the cover dvd's there always seems to be a version popping up every so often
PCPro, PCPlus, etc, chuck versions on their cover discs.
Apart from that i don't know of any free programs which will create an image. And to be honest, even tho i got that on a cover dvd, i still ended up getting ghost.
So, erm, i haven't really been much help, sorry. But i'd say if you are skint, keep an eye on the magazines
I've always used Acronis T.I and it is quite faultless. Not to mention easy as pie to use. Personally i wouldn't trust a freeware imaging program even if there were one. IMO, stump up the cash or wait until you find a version on a cover-disc as mentioned above.
We use Symantec Ghost Corporate edition 8.0 at school and it really was brilliant. I went in on friday to re-image a classroom of PC's and it did them all in one go via Ghost Cast Does anyone have any idea how much it would cost me to use this on my home domain? I can't make much sense of the symantec website...
I had problems when trying to replace the image of my o/s with ghost 9. Sorted it by downloading a dodgy copy of systemworks 06 premium in order to get the recovery cd from it and then using nf4 drivers that came with board rather than the symantec ones which were apparently the same (even though they kept causing it to crash) i managed to boot into recovery environment and replace image.
Norton tech support were useless - kept saying that norton doesnt support 64bit. Tried explaining that it was o/s that counted and i was using 32bit xp and so fact that i had a64 makes no difference - hung up in the end - useless.
