Ok, I downloaded the free 'ad supported' Ghost Recon a few days back and today I thought I'd give it a go. Not that simple.

Does anyone know of a way to install this game without the need to actually relocate to the US? I've tried masking my IP, and my Ubi.com profile has always been set to the US ever since I set it up back in the dark ages, about 2 weeks before the original IL2: Sturmovik was released.

Any ideas as how to circumvent this minor, if ever so stupid, niggle?

i believe sites can detect your browser language information

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-UK; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20070725 Firefox/2.0.0.6

i think you need to change your language options in your browser and/or windows user options

If this is anything like the FarCry installer then just signing up to the ubi.com account and making sure to set your country to the US is enough to trick it into accepting the login ...

That's all I did and it worked first time, no need to change any language settings or fake a US ip addy ...

It appears that UBI have been screwing around with this and the Far Cry releases, rumour has it that they have deactivated the country for all recent registrations...

Or they have changed the validation to base it on either email addy or IP
I cant get a community manager to provide an official statement but the official forum is full of unhappy 'customers'.

Incidentally I got GR last week for 97p from a well known UK PC retailer...

Well, this is a crock of the proverbial ain't it? What's the point in putting a game up for free download and then only limiting install to a certain Country, even though anyone can download it no matter where they are located?

***...
EDIT: Okay how come "Quote for Truth" gets abbrviation gets the *** treatment?

Especially when the first site to host the DLs took 3 days to include the country specific warning on the DL page.

Look on the brightside, even those that got Far Cry working cant play MP because they didnt distribute a CD Key with the copies...

Because the game is supported by advertising, and those advertisements will likely be targetted at the US market. Ubi would rather people outside the US bought their games.

Restricting the download location would be fairly problematic given the way these type of things tend to get distributed. e.g. if they ran their own in-house servers with ip checking then it would probably cost them a ton in terms of bandwidth (and effort).

Then why not just simply inform people that they can't install it outside of the US before they waste ½ GBs worth of bandwidth for nothing?

Every site other than the one that hosted it first carried that warning.
It was only added on Fileplanet 3 days later...
