Ghurka VC hero banned from Britain

what's the reason, your not signing it? is it that you think petitions are useless or that he doesn't deserve to live in England?

I think all Ghurka's should have a right to live in England as long as they don't have a massive criminal background or some other reason.

I'm not going to sign the petition but it is such a shame he isn't allowed to come to the UK. ANY Ghurka who fought for our nation (without a massive criminal record etc) should be automatically granted the right to live in this country if he wants. :(

Not only does he deserve to live in the UK, the country he fought for he deserves to have the best in healthcare and accomodattion and i don't care how many native dole scum have to be but to the back of the queue to make it happen.

Small minded civil servants who have never had to sacrifice more than a lunch break for their country represent the worst of what this country has become, and this Ghurka hero represents the best.

Signed.

Do people realise that these people aren't slaves, they were very well paid for what they did, which arguably is why they signed up - to achieve an income and standard of living far beyond what they could expect in their home country otherwise. Even now this man who wants to come here is receiving a very generous pension in relative terms (it wouldn't go far here but it goes a long way there).

There is an interesting blog from someone who may be an ex-soldier (says he worked with the Ghurkas a few times) who agrees with me - in fact he's very outspoken about it. I can't link to it as it has lots of swearing but it is the first hit on google.

They were not very well paid. They IIRC were paid less than a squaddie from the UK, which was a LOT less than American GI's got paid. They were all volunteers too, not one had to be conscripted unlike men from the UK.

They didn't do it for the money, they did it because they thought it an honour to fight for Britain. A quaint notion that has gone out of fashion in the intervening years, and we are all the poorer for it.

Many Ghurkas do settle here, thats the issue with this guy. If it was a hard and fast rule then fair enough, but Ghurkas who frankly have done less for the country are allowed to settle, yet this guy is not. Lets face it, its not like he's going to be a drain on our resources for very long is it ?

I'd swap him for white chav scum who will never contribute to our nation at a rate of a thousand to one.

They *were* very well paid, relative to the cost of living in their country. That is the only meaningful comparison.

They didn't do it for the money, they did it because they thought it an honour to fight for Britain.
How on earth do you know that?

That sounds rather racist.
