Gifted a Samsung Tab 3 GT-P5210 - can I update it?

Hi - as per title really. Been gifted the above and it's running Android 4.4.2 so a lot of new stuff won't install onto it.
Is it worth/possible to do anything to get it to run a newer version of Android? I've heard the term Rooting, but never tried to do anything like that before. Is it even worth doing/will it run a new enough version of Android to be worth it?
Simple as possible please, being a noob and all lol
