Linksys Cisco SE2500 switch
Western Digital Sharespace
Using cat5e

I'm trying to get a gig connection from my Shuttle to my NAS. The Shuttle is only showing the network speed as 100mb. I've updated the NIC driver directly from Marvells website but it won't auto detect the speed, i've tried forcing 1000mb from the NIC options in device manager but it drops the network connection. Any ideas ?

Tried different cables? 100mbit uses only 4 of the 8 wires in an ethernet cable whereas 1000mbit uses all 8 so it's easy for a dodgy cable to cause this.

Dont forget to make sure the NAS is set to 1gb, not 100mb too(It might have an option).

*Edit* As above, have you get any different cables to try?

cat5e is not rated for gigabit normally. In a lot of case it works, but there'd no guarantee. Get a good cat6e cable.

Cat5e will be fine for gigabit over a short distance.

I'd suspect your cable may not have a pair crimped correctly or one of the NICs is set to 100mb.

Incorrect, cat5 isn't typically recommended for longer gigabit cable runs but it'll usually still work. Cat5e most definitely is fine at 100 metres. There is absolutely no need for cat6 or cat6e with gigabit.

For more info you check this (somewhat old) Cisco link - http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk389/tk214/tech_digest09186a0080091a86.html#wp17263

That's still running as an 100Mb network then,

100 Mbs = 12.5 MBs (divide bits by 8 to get bytes)

When it was running at 100mb i was getting around 8mbps, since I changed to cat6 and being detected as 1gig it's now transferring at 11-12mbps. However I just upgraded my computer and now it's transferring at 21-22mbps.

Been having similar issues with my network, which is all wired in Cat 6.
My problem turned out to be some patch cables, although sold as Cat 6, they would not work at gigabit speeds.

Changed the offending ones & everything is running superbly now.

I only bought 2 cat6 cables, 1 from NAS to switch and 1 from switch to computer :(

What sort of speeds should I be seeing ?
