Hi Guys

I have

- WD (My Book Live) NAS drive gigbit enabled.
- Sky Sagem router (no gigabit feature), ADSL broadband connection
- laptop - qualcomm altheors ar9285 802.11b/g/n adapter

I am assuming due to the limited capability of my router and adapter, transfer speed from laptop to my NAS drive is quite slow in the range of 2mb/s on average.

I heard introducing a gigabit ethernet switch should boost speed.

My questions.

- If i incoporate a gigabit switch, will i attain a better speed even though my laptop adapter doesnt have a gigabit feature

-How do I connect an ASDL router to a gigabit switch or perhaps, whats the conventional way of connecting a gigabit switch

cheers

If you only have a single Gigabit capable device then adding a Gigabit switch isn't going to make much, if any, difference.

If the laptop connects via wireless then it isn't going to help at all.

edit: you connect a Gigabit switch to a router with a standard Cat5e network cable.

Are you saying BOTH router and laptop ethernet adapter has to be gigabit enabled or one of them would suffice?

this is the connection of my broadband

If the laptop supported Gigabit and you added a Gigabit switch then you could have a Gigabit connection between the laptop and the NAS. The router's network speed wouldn't be an issue.

If you're only currently seeing 2mb/s from the NAS you've got other problems.

I'm not sure if you're referring to Megabits or Megabytes, but in either case you're falling well short of what a standard 100 Mbit/s network connection will support. Increasing the available bandwidth isn't going to help.

Sky Sagem router---->Gigabit Switch------->Laptop
___________________Gigabit Switch------->WD (My Book Live) NAS

The above setup will give you gigabit speed access to your NAS provided you use a gigabit NIC in your laptop, otherwise your speed to your NAS will be limited by the maximun speed of whatever NIC/WiFi you are using in your laptop. Internet access or speed will be the same whatever (unless you have a ropey wifi card)

That direct link is pushing your luck with the forum rules.

If the laptop is old enough to support PCMCIA (or PC Card of any sort) then trying to add Gigabit is likely to be a waste of time.

If it supports ExpressCard there's a chance it'd be worthwhile (assuming the underlying NAS performance issue is addressed).
