I've just transferred a 30 gb file between my laptop and pc via a direct ethernet connection @ a reported 86mb/s over a gigabit link ... so if I get a gigabit router would I expect that speed to remain the same? If not, what should I expect ... is the cheaper kit up to it?

This is on a home network so I am not looking to spend a fortune ...!

Laptop has gigabit port?
I reckon so as that is about the transfer rate as i am getting on my home network with gig ports and a gig router.Speeds will i think be dependant on the speed of the hdd in your lappy too :)

Good to know the router won't necessarily slow things down ..

Laptop has gogabit & drive is an SSD so that's covered, pc drive is HDD so that may well be my limit!

unless you are going to transfer from a nas to a hdd,:( speeds drop to a pitiful 12 megabytes per second with my dlink 323

I get about this with a HP Giga Switch, before I went 'giga' speeds were sub 10mbs
