As topic really chaps. I just realized today that I only get 100mbit on all my computers!
My main pc is connected to a gigibit switch in my room which goes downstairs to a virgin media superhub which is also gigabit, and that connects to another pc which has gigabit! But they all run at 100mbit.
I've only just noticed this as I have several dozen GB to copy pc to pc as a mate is coming round to play games lol.
Is there something I need to enable somewhere to get them running?

Have you tried selecting the port speed on your NICs? What grade cabling are you using?

Basic cat5e I beleive. the one pc to switch and pc to router is a couple of meter hop, the one switch to router is like 15 meters.
How do I go about selecting port speed? I thought it might be something basic I overlooked lol

What speeds are you actually getting ?, if you go into network and sharing and click on Ethernet what speed is showing ?

Also on the Virgin superhub what colour are the ports on the back showing ?, orange is 100mb, green on gigabit and does your switch have any indication of speed (lights) on it ?

Yup yup the network says 100mbit and on the router I am plugged in to the gigabit ones :p

If all your hardware is gigabit, then you just have crap cables. Windows will automatically go the fastest speed that it can, no need to tweak it to get gigabit.*

Yes, you can tweak it further to go a little faster once you have gigabit

the switch to the pc was made by the switch people (tenda?!), the router to the other pc was made by virgin. The switch to the router was made by me.

Ah ok thats what I thought.
Ok heres a question then. Later on when I move the other pc to my room (cause a mate is coming over to LAN) they will both be on good short cables to the gigabit switch. Should they then be able to transfer to each other as gigabit?

Infact should I be able to be connected anyway at gb and only get 100mb speeds to the other machine?
Does that mean the cable from me to the switch is crap?

can you try PC-router-PC with pre made cables?

I should be moving the other pc upstairs shortly. I'll see what cables I have hanging around. I had to repair so many a month ago because most of them didnt have clips any more and kept slipping out. Its feasible that I made a few mistakes along the way lol.

'made by me' is what I was highlighting

If you can't sort it quickly, I'd just take the hard drive out and copy them over.

I'd try it on the router as opposed to the switch. The switch probably won't assign IP addresses etc
