Hi Ive just fitted my house out with Cat 6 cabling but im a little stuck on what gigabit switch to use. The switch will be fitted next to my adsl2 router and my plan was to connect the switch to my router to supply bband to all points on the network. I originally planned to use the Dlink GDS-1008D(need 7 ports) because of the low power consumption and ability to wall mount it. After reading up a bit though it seems jumbo frame support is really useful on a cat 6 network to reduce overheads which the Dlink doesnt support.

Another item ive read said that if your using the network for internet as well jumbo frame support will cause problems with pages loading, something to do with the larger frame sizes causing pages or requests to time out. Im now confused and dont really want to make the wrong descision without getting some other opinions.

What do you guys think? and any other switches i should consider as well as the Netgear GS108, i have about £50-60 for one.

The Netgear stuff is RUBBISH. I have had one, as have two of my housemates. We no longer use them because they are plagued with issues - throughput and autonegotiation being the biggest two bugbears with them.

Before I eventually got a vastly better switch I upgraded my Netgear unit to an 8 port linksys one and the difference was staggering. With jumbo frames enabled and some tweaks to the windows networking stack I got RAM-to-RAM transfer speeds of just a shade under the theoretical maximum whereas the Netgear could only deliver about 70% of that speed.

Cheers for the reply. I can get the Linsys SD2008 for within my budget and its wall mountable too, any opinions on that switch?

Also what about broadband issues with jumbo frames have you heard anything around that or is it nothing to worry about?

EDIT: just realised that switch doesn't have jumbo frame support from what i can see.

I have a netgear 16-port gigabit switch and a Cable Firewall router and Ive had no problems with them tbh. They are both the blue stuff.
