Gigabit switch recommendation

Hi guys,

Just moved into a new house and I'm looking at getting either an 8 or 16 port gigabit switch to serve my room, friends room, 2 servers and a couple nas boxes. The switch will connected to a virgin router for Internet connection.

I've seen the netgear gs108 and gs116 which seem a decent price. Any experiences with these or other recommendations?

The netgears you've mentioned are ok, but the HP's beat them all ways round - however are far pricier!

HP Procurves are great, if I were to buy a new switch I would buy one without a doubt. I currently use a Dell PowerConnect 24 Port Gigabit switch but the web interface is not as great as HP or Cisco but it works alright

actually I'm looking for a new gigabit switch - preferably one that doesn't consume shed loads of leccy.

I was surprised to find one of my Netgears using 10W which is crazy tbh

You can find the HP 1810-8G for less than the GS108T at the moment.

Definitely go with the HP.

I recently got one of these and it works great for home to small office use. Mine had a dodgy power adapter (worked but made noise) but OcUK said its been the only one returned, so although they are cheap they seem to be decent quality.

netgear gs108 - works spot on for me - no issues with ps3, main pc, server, router, squeezebox etc all hard wired in.

What's the advantages of buying a HP gigabyte switch over the likes of netgear even if it's for home use.

Need one myself and would like to know the pro's and con's.

Mine is just a personal recommendation, I had a Netgear before the HP at it just wasn't as good, throughput was alway poor in one direction!

As soon as I swapped the Netgear for the HP problems went away.

Pretty sure the HP's have much better throughput and work so much better when pushed hard...

I'm thinking of getting one of the Green D-Link's (DGS-1005D), they claim to use very little power. My Netgears are using far too much for always on home applications, the Netgears also run really hot.

Ditto - I was looking at the d-link's too - specified at 6W ... Still can't see how a switch needs to use that much :confused:

Why would anyone need or want a managed switch for basic home use?!
