Gigabit switch recommendation

I'm probably going to swap my two Netgear GS105 for D-Link's DGS-1005D. Sick of the Netgears taking 10W each. It also keeps falling back to 100Mbps for some reason, and I have to keep turning power on/off to fix.

For unmanaged switches, anything with enough ports will do the job. No point in spending more than you need to.

I'd avoid netgear, purely on the basis that back in the day their hubs and switches weren't particularly reliable.
I've been running on a pair of 8 port £20 Asus gigabit switches for two years now without a hitch.

Don't forget, most managed switches will run out of the box without configuration.

Only thing I changed when I got my HP ProCurve 1810-24G was the IP address :D:p

Does anyone know what the situation is with these lower cost unmanaged switches and ipv6 ?

I haven't seen any definitive statement if they will work or not.

As far as I know they switch on MAC and not IP address and I don't believe the tcp packet size/format will change so maybe they will. Maybe not...

I have an unreliable DLink 8 port gigabit switch which I want to replace and I need more capacity any way. I would prefer to know in advance if what I get (most likely 2 of the recommended ProCurve) would be usable with ipv6 or not.

Anyone know for sure ?

The 1810-24G will pass IPV6, but the management address will only work on IPV4, which may not be a problem for you?

Doubt that would be a problem as it is only for domestic use.

But I would prefer 2 x 8 ports though as I want them in different rooms. Is it me or has the 1810-8G almost doubled in price over the last few weeks? I am sure you could get them for about £55 recently but now they are £95+.

You can get the v1410-8g for around £50 if you don't want a managed one.

I can't think of a reason for a managed switch in a home / small office either.

For the last few weeks I've been trying to choose between £50 for a HP switch I can ignore, and £25 quid for an alternative which may cause me headaches in the the future. It seems I don't care enough to make a decision, as I just keep putting it off.

Oops ! It was the 1410 and not the 1810 I was looking at before and these still are around £50.

I would buy 2 of these in a flash if I knew for sure they would pass ipv6. I just want an element of future proofing and avoid having to buy again when/if I might need to go to ipv6.

Unmanaged switches work fine with IPv6. They work at layer 2, whilst IP of whatever version is at layer 3. Switches don't even look at it.
If you need any other confirmation I'm using IPv6 fine across my cheapo unmanaged gigabit switches.

Got so frustrated with interminable free routers I ended up shelling out myself. Got a Billion Bipak 7800n. One of the best IT purchases I've ever made, gigabit, wireless n, wake on lan, and a decent interface that doesn't lag for no apparent reason like most!

Read some reviews.

Cause managed switches are cool :cool:

Exactly :)

Plus I'm sure some management could be useful?

Anyway thanks for all the replies, I picked up the hp on a well know auction site for sub £50 which seems cheap. Not too many hps around though and the netgear was basically about the same price so obviously i went for the hp based on the feedback here and extra features.
