Hi guys

Thinking about getting this Gigabit Switch to go with the recently installed Cat6 cables running through the house.

Do I need to do anything important to connect it to the wireless adsl modem router I am currently using? For example how do i connect it to router? Will I have to have manually entered IP addresses on the network?

I read that I would use the switch as a gateway so do I have to manually enter the gateway in the local area connection properties?

Can someone just quickly explain how this all works to me.

Cheers

Mike

The switch is just providing more ports for your router....imagine it as that, rather than a separate entity - so you'll just need another Cat5e/Cat6 cable to go from the switch to the router :)

OK, cool thanks :D

Also another quick question, is that any good as a gigabit switch? What kind of speeds will I be getting with it? I have been reading that the Netgear switches on Gigabit dont run much faster than 100Mbps but I cant believe that??

I've got a 5 port version myself and my transfer rates across the network are around 35MB/sec. It's not full gigabit speeds, but it's still almost 4 times faster than 100mbit - on which I got 9 or 10MB/sec transfer rates.

With Gb switches, do a bit of research on MTU values. I think I read many moons ago that 'jumbo MTUs' of 9000 (instead of more standard 1500ish) are better when using Gb networks.

I have no idea if this will affect net traffic through the 100Mb connection to your router though.

*Stop press* Just skimmed this, it may be useful, I've no idea of it's reliability:
