I just installed a Gigabyte 4870 on my trusty old Epox EP-9NPA+ Ultra (nForce 4 Ultra) which uses a PCI Express 1.0a slot, everything is working great,my old 7800gt had served me well but I was after a change and something faster.

I know some people were concerned about old boards etc...
You know what gave me the most trouble?..damn Nvidia drivers, even after I uninstalled them ,booted into safe mode and used DriverSweeper I still had 3 that came up on bootup in Vista x64,anyway using regedit fixed those 3 remaining dll.files.

I'm upgrading my cpu,ram/motherboard down the road(I better start saving)) but the price of the Gigabyte 4870 was too low to pass up(probably lowest price I have seen on the web).

I'm using 8.6 hotfix drivers which seem very stable after testing of a few games.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to post this, it's very useful info to those of us with older motherboards.

The question now I guess is do I upgrade (from 3870X2) to 4870, or wait for 4870X2?

Ye the 4870 is a great card, my best purchase yet, loving it. Good to know the latest cards work with oldest spec PCI-E.

Yep great card,my first dual slot video card too,btw I'm using an OCZ 700W GameXtreme PSU that I purchased from OCUK a year ago(after my hiper 580w blew up).I knew the 700w would come in handy for upgrades :).

4870X2 will give you the biggest jump in performance and cost, however its all down to what PSU you have I guess,if money is no object I would wait for 4870X2.

Probably a stupid question, but is PCI-E 1.0 the same as 1.0a? My motherboard is the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 if that helps.
