Gigabyte 965p & IDE help

Hi guys

Just upgraded to a gigabyte 965p DS3 mobo with an Intel Core 2 duo E6300 processor but have issues around connecting up my IDE 80gb & 160gb hard drives & my DVD ROM & DVD Rewriter. The mobo only has one IDE slot so I can connect my 2 hard drives to that but what about the ROM drives ? can they only be connected via IDE ?? If so is my only alternative to get a PCI IDE connector card...if this is the case, how am I going to install drivers which accompany the the IDE card on CD, when the rom drive is out of action.

You could put 1 HD and 1 CD on one IDE and that will let you install the drivers for the card.

Cool...did not think of that !

Bit of a noob on this but once the IDE card is installed, do I have to set DVD & DVD rewriter up as a master & slave ?

Most PCI-PATA IDE cards don't need drivers. You may need to adjust the drive boot settings in the BIOS to make sure it boots first from add-in cards.

If you got 2 PCI-PATA IDE Cards you could run everything on a primary IDE channel which is the best option, but with one I would suggest plugging one HDD into the motherboard, the other into one of the 2 PATA channels on the PCI card and the two optical drives as the master and slave on the second PATA channel.

The HIghpoint PCI-A133 and MRI PCI-A133 are the same card based on the Sii680 chipset and they are good cards that do not require any drivers to work as a bootable card. They are only 2-port cards though. 4 Port cards used to be available (OcUK are seling a 4-port RAID card) but they are becoming more and more rare.

Another possibility is to buy a couple of SATA to PATA convertors. Both Serial ATA and Parallel ATA drives are IDE, so all you need is a serial to parallel convertor box (about £5 from a well known auction site) and you can make use of your PATA HDD on the SATA connectors. ok....i have connected my 80gb hard drive & my DVD drive to the existing IDE connection & reinstalled WinXP. I have connected a IDE controller card - then reconnected my 2 hard drives to the existing IDE & my 2 DVD drives to new IDE controller card...when booted up I can not see the 2 DVD drives in explorer.......is this then something to do with the BIOS settings ? If so could someone please advise what I need to do in BIOS to recify.

I have purchased a ******** PCI Ultra ATA133 / 100 IDE Controller Card (sorry I know a rival but you had sold out & their shop is minutes around the corner

Would connecting both DVD drives to MOBO & the hard drives to connector card work ?

Try a windows update first. You may have a Silicon Image icon in your control panel. If you don't then Windows Update will give you the hardware plug-in you need to configure the card. That quite often forces the system to recognise the card. If that doesn't work then the chances are that you are using the 680r BIOS which makes the card think it is a RAID card. If it thinks it's a RAID card, it won't work with individual drives. Does it show a RAID (CTRL+S or F4 to start RAID setup) startup message on boot? You can flash the BIOS so it knows it's not a RAID card or sometimes there is a jumper you can remove to turn it from RAID to non-RAID.

Disable soundcard ?

OK Finally working...I have connected my 2 hard drives to the IDE connector card & my 2 DVD drives to the mobo...anyone see any issues around this ?

Next question ? ....... how do I disable the on board soundcard on the 965P in BIOS as i need to install my Creative card...the manual does not explain?

Under 'Integrated Peripherals' - Azalia Codec: set this to disabled.
