Good Evening,

I have a Gigabyte 990FXA UD30AMD 990FX motherboard, purchased from here as part of a gaming bundle in March 2014, so it is quite old.

I ordered it with two sticks of 4gb each Teamgroup Elite Black 1600mhz of ram. Recently I decided to increase the ram to 16gb by ordering another two x 4gb of ram, this time Timetec DDR3. They arrived today and on installing the computer wouldn't boot up, when I removed them it would. I have noticed the sticker on the ram sticks state it to be DDR3L, although the (Amazon) advert stated DDR3, I didn't even know DDR3L existed.

On doing some research there are suggestions that some motherboards will not accept DDR3L or that you shouldn't mix them with DDR3, some say this is nonsense.

Would anyone be able to advise me please if the above is indeed true or recommend a suitable make which would go alongside my original ram, which appears is no longer available, or whether I would be better replacing the two 4gb with two 8gb.

My other specs are if needed:

Windows 10 64 bit
AMD Piledriver FX-6 six core 6300 black edition Processor 4.2ghz
Nvidia 1060 graphics card

Many thanks in advance.

According to this the L stands for low power.

I imagine it would work if you had all dims the same but it wont work if it's mixed as it wont be able to apply the right voltages to the different sets of modules.

Only guessing.

Try it the other way round. Leave the DDR3L sticks in and take out the originals and see if it will work.

That will give you you're answer.
