Hiya,

I built a system in 2017 using a Gigabyte AB350M-Gaming 3 with a Ryzen 1600. It's still chugging along.

I'm looking to breathe some new life into it, and extend its life for a few more years. It's quite impressive that after 6 years this is even possible.

I'm considering putting a 5700X on there, as it's a major bump in performance and has a similar TDP to the 1600. The other option is a 5800X3D - bit more costly but the best upgrade for AM4, from what I've read.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience or opinions of running either of these CPUs on the AB350M, or another early 350 board? The CPUs are both supported with a recent BIOS, but I'm not sure about running a CPU with the power draw of the X3D on there.

Cheers.

Don't know about either of those, but I have a 3900x running flawlessly on a week 1 b350 tomahawk, and that has a higher power draw than either of them. I think so long as there's a supporting bios either should be fine.

It will be fine, what's your main use ?
Best described as mixed, I suppose - some Docker/k8s stuff, lightweight coding, non-FPS gaming: (A)RPGs, strategy games, MMOs in the past - nothing major that requires high framerates. I've not gamed on it for about 18 months though (still running an RX580 on it - which is another thing I plan on upgrading if I stick with this machine) - I've been using the PS5 for gaming recently. I'm running Linux and Windows on it - the OS changes depending on what I'm focusing on at the time.

I suspect the 5700X will be more than enough and the 5800X3D would be overkill. I could probably just leave it as is, to be honest, but have recently had an itch to upgrade it. It's got 16GB of 3200 DDR4 and an old/slow M2 SSD. I'd probably look at bumping those up along with the CPU.

I would be tempted to drop a 5600 in there you can get them for £120 or push the boat out for the 5700x .

But if your not struggling for performance and your pc is doing what you need then don't bother keep saving until you need to upgrade.

Board is more than enough to handle any of these CPUs. Recently refurbished a PC with the same board running a 3900X.

+1 to the 5600 idea, if it's mainly just to satisfy that upgrade itch. Would still be a huge jump in performance from the 1600. Would also be compatible with Windows 11's official requirements too, if you ever want to upgrade to that.

Thanks, everyone. Good to know I can upgrade if needed/wanted. It still amazes me that we can drop the latest AM4 CPUs into a board that's 6 years old.

mickyflinn is probably right about not needing to bother at this stage though, sadly!
