GigaByte and Ram Problem ??

Just building my new PC and after completing the build it won't power up :(

I was told that the GiGabyte 965P-DS3P can cause problems with certain ram. I have 2.1 Ram (Geil) DDR2. I was told that the mainboard tries to use 1.8 volts to the Ram but as the Ram requires 2.1 it's as if I have no Ram installed and nothing powers up.

Has anyone heard of this as I haven't, please help...

the only issues i ahd with this board is i forgot to put the 2nd psu connector in the top left hand corner, and a friend of mine had a duff psu with this board.

do any of the fans spin when you press the power button?

have you tried just one stick in the mobo rather than both?

None of the fans spin whatsoever, I have used the PSU with my P4 system and it works.

I have only tried 2 sticks of RAM in Banks 1 and 3, I have also tried linking the +/- of the PWR Switch just in case there is a faulty switch and no joy. I connected a small LED to the PWR Switch on the mainboard and it lights up.. I have no idea of the problem..

Hi, the board does default to 1.8v for the ram but it should'nt stop it from booting up. Mine did'nt anyway. If you can get it to boot go into the bios and press Ctrl+F1 to get the advanced options up. Go down to motherboard intelligent tweaker and change the vdimm to +0.3v and the timings to whatever they should be according to the ram label. My Geil Ultra pc2-6400 C4 defaults to 1.8v @5-5-5-15 when first installed but after setting it in the bios it now runs at it's correct 2.1v @4-4-4-12.

You may have a faulty board or other component though. Have you made sure that the case power switch is connected to the mobo header the right way around? Have you got all the neccesary power connectors plugged in? Sorry to ask but it can be quite easy to overlook. Check that the motherboards not grounding out against a spacer or the case.

What is the psu and whats the rest of your rig?

What I find strange is that nothing seems to spin. Surely if it was a faulty part the PSU will still power up?

Everything is connected the correct way...

Not necessarily. If the mobo is dead then the rig probably would'nt power up at all. Have you tied stripping it down to the minimum as in just a single stick of ram, the hdd, the graphics card and the cpu?

Silly question............You have'nt accidently turned off the psu by it's switch on the rear? I did that one once. :o

yup, Ive stripped it down and worked my way up and nothing. The only thing I haven't tried is 1 stick of ram.. Do you think this could be the problem if so why?

Thanks in advance

Also have you ever heard of 2.1 ram problems with this board as this was mentioned to me and was told to try 1.8v ram..

Yes, this was a big problem back when the DS range was first launched, but I believe it was fixed with later BIOS revisions.

I have the revision 3.3 mainboard would this board be causing the problems?

Also, if this is the problem would it not power up anything.. Its just that I have nothing no fans turning or anything....

It should be fixed by that revision. Oh sorry, the board doesn't power on at all? That doesn't sound like the memory problem, because if the memory was to blame, the machine would power on, then off, then on, then off and so on.

Have you tried removing everything thats non essential such as hard drives?

Yup everything has been removed and all that was left was the CPU and the Memory and still nothing.... The PSU seems to work with my P4 system yet it doesn't when connected to my new Gigabyte board..

As stated, Ive tried tied the PWR Switch on the board by using a jumer then removing it and still nothing.

If the CPU was faulty would it still power up then on and off ect?

The seller is sending me a stick of ram to test which is 1.8 but Im not sure if this is going to work....

Hi,

I had the same problem with my new build using the motherboard in my sig. My problem was that I had connect the front panel connectors to the motherboard incorrectly.

Once I sorted this everything booted fine. Have you checked these to make sure they are 100% correct?

What do you mean by the front panel connectors? Sorry to sound dumb but do you mean the USB ect? I didn't think these would effect anything. As far as I am aware everything in regards to power connectors ATX ect is correct..

Or do you mean the power switch as I have even tried using a jumper to complete the circuit and still no joy in powering up..

What I was wondering if I just connect the motherboard with no ram, no cpu or hardware whatsoever would the system power up or does it require at least a cpu to power up to enter the BIOS?

Hi,

In my case it was the reset switch connectors that were wrong and this stopped anything from happening. The motherboard & fans just did nothing when I switched on the power. If you havent checked them then have a look at all of them as this could be the problem.

Did your PSU fan come on or was it completetly dead before you sorted out the reset switch connectors?

I think you can rule out it being a RAM problem. The system would power up and you'd get some kind of warning, i.e a series of beeps, kinda like an error code, if it doesn't find any memory.

Might be worth checking the clear CMOS jumper. I have heard stories of motherboards shipping with it enabled.

It does'nt have one. My Rev 2.0 board does'nt anyway. It has the two pins but no jumper. If i want to clear the cmos i have to remove the battery. It may be worth trying that to see if that clears the problem but it seriously looks like either the mobo or the cpu is dead. If it was ram it would still power up but give you some sort of error beep.
