Gigabyte B550 Pro or X570 Elite

Looking to build a new AMD based system and these two boards are close in money. A B550 chipset would accommodate my usage just fine, but any reason to choose the X570 Elite instead?

B550 Pro advantages over X570 Elite (rev 1.0) are:
  • Supports higher memory rates up to 5200
  • 256Mb flash (up from 128Mb)
  • 2.5Gb capable Lan (my switch is only 1Gb anyway!)
  • USB Type-C port on the back panel
  • Realtek ALC1220 (instead of ALC1200)
  • No chipset fan
  • Six layer PCB instead of four
There's must be a bunch of other changes too? I also note the Elite board is still at rev 1.0, whilst the rest of the Gigabyte X570 lineup has been up-issued to rev 1.1 (which seems to mostly address the mem OC rates, plus thunderbolt add-in).
 
There really isn't that much differences.

Memory support is really decided mostly by memory controller in CPU.
Though also PCB design/quality has effect, but that isn't big at memory speeds for which you can buy memory at reasonable prices.

Chipset fan stays mostly passive if you just have working case cooling.

Revision means only if there's been changes to board after initial release.
And they're not always to better direction, but can also mean cost downs.
 
B550 and X570 the real difference is the number of PCIe4 lanes you get. Everything else is all comparable.

ram speed are supported by cpu and with bios updated even old boards can have 5200Mhz support. But that won’t be achievable on zen processors.

However with additional PCIe lanes you may be able to significantly expand your addin cards especially if you are after more NVMe drives (more than 2). Which you can get an addin card to expand.

that to me really is the difference between b550 and x570.

@cocjh1 above is right , up coming run 5000hz with higher infinity fabric speeds so can get a bigger 1:1 ratio speeds .
higher the PCB , the less interference and higher possible ram speed.

b550 path ways have been updated from x570 , naturally through R&D and Gigabyte tends to develop Intel and AMD boards in tandem

for the Price id go B550 Pro unless you intend to use dual m.2 pcie 4.0 sticks

problem is with new agesa updates from AMD, specially with new CPU designs like incoming APU and ZEN3. they dont tell 100% whats on the update to vendors and hence you get a lot of setting that worked fine before, not working. Vendors had to take the stick for it when actually true fault lies with AMD
