Done a bit of research first!

Currently E6600 - want to upgrade

Seems my options are are E6600 or Q9450(or similar) - any others ?

What are the arguments for either of the above ?

TIA

Which DS3? 965P/P31/P35/P43/P45?

Is your E6600 at stock or overclocked? Most will hit 3.6Ghz easily depending on the motherboard. Try clocking it and see the gains to be had if it is'nt already.

Have you tried increasing cpu voltage and lowering the ram speed by adjusting the divider? I suspect it's the ram running out of spec. The 965P DS3 is a half decent board for clocking.

Time for an update:

I checked my BIOS and found the chip had reverted to 2.4 (stock). Almost any attempt to overclock (though not all) would result in the BIOS doing an immediate reboot and recovery.

So after some research I unplugged the the Toshiba 1TB USB disk and voila - no more reboots. Now sitting at 3Ghz (on air)

Question still stands though!
