Probably me being completly stupid but using the supplied SATA backplate and power connections can you just plug drives in on the run or do they have to be present at start up?

Cheers

In theory you should be able to if you connect the backplate to the purple ports (the orange ports can work, but the purple JMicron ports are meant to have better e-sata support).

Be sure to have the Jmicron SATA drivers installed, and have the Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode option in the BIOS set to ACHI (it's at the bottom of the Intergrated Peripherals menu).

I *think* the hard drive also needs to be SATA2/SATA300.

Ah probably why just plugging it in didn't work then. Connected to the orange(intel) ports and its a first generation sata drive.
