Gigabyte EX58 UD5, No post screen

Hi all,

Compliments of the season to you all - now for the question.

Just recently put together a system with Gigabyte EX58 UD5+ Corsair dominator 1600 ram And I7 920 chip all runs fine But .....

When I boot up either cold or restart the post screen - ie the first Bios screen never shows up - I have tried the setting in bios for the splash screen on or off plus pressing the Tab key but it refuses to show.

The only way I can get it to show is if I go into bios and load optimized defaults and then it shows splash screen and I can press tab key to see post screen. Anybody else seen this or know the cause of it?

I have loaded the official F4 bios to fix the resume from sleep issue with str, but I had the above problem before this anyway - any ideas anybody?

Would be grateful for input on this one

Ps the problem even happens at stock speeds - only running at 3gig at the mo - with turbo mode ie only 3 gig on 21 multi if that makes sense.

Like the graphic card isn't firing up fast enough? Which GF card is it?

Try another slot. There's an initial graphics setting for PCI. Maybe setting a hard drive delay might help. Very odd one that.

Hi fornowgain - nice of you to respond.

In all my years as a pc tech I have not seen anything like this - very strange.
The gfx card is a evga 8800 GTS 640mb. I have the graphics card in the first pci express slot - so perhaps try the next one ? I will also try a hard drive delay as you suggest -you never know.

Thinking about it could it be the psu not supplying enough juice very early on?
the psu is a Corsair 620 - about a year old - worked fine in the previous build.

I will get back with the results of the changes.

It could easily be a psu issue, recently helped with a UD5 with boot issues using on a newish Thermaltake 1200w.

Hi fornowagain,

Just tried swapping the graphics card to pci ex slot 2 and setting a hdd delay of 10 - weird thing is i was able to get the post screen after saving the changes to the bios, but only for the very first boot - since then no - this is really weird. Hope somebody can come up with a suggestion or two because I am baffled.

hmm try changing the powersupply... see if that does the trick, if not must be something else :|

If possible try different RAM.
Borrow some off a friend and see if it cures your issue.

Problem is finding a friend with DDR 3 :)
Mine are too poor :(

Try running the Ram @ 1333 and everything else @ stock only until it is all working. I found mine was unstable until I did this could not even run it without hard lockups in the bios. I was on F3 as well.

Failing this try just 1 ram stick to isolate which one may be faulty also ensure your ram is 1.65v or lower (use the default settings) as I found this also caused a lot of stability issues when you let the mobo decide what settings to use.

The dominator ram is brand new for this build so it should not have a problem - but that doesn't mean that there is not a problem. I will run memtest to see if it is ok.

Borrowing DDr3 could be rather difficult !!!! Lol

Hi,

Thanks for your suggestions - see my post below as I am going to test the ram. I will try the ram at 1333 - it is rated at 1600 so it should cope with 1333 without a problem.

Will get back to you.

This mobo is funny about DDR3 speeds for some reason so I reckon that is the source of your problems. Run it at 1333 only and let the mobo work out the optimium timings (it will default to a lesser spec than the ram is capable of).

I love mine but reckon Gigabyte need to do some more work on DDR3 auto timings as evidenced by their F5a bios:

Does it still load into windows, even though you don't see the splash screen?

Hi there,

Yes it loads windows and runs apparently fine - I just find it annoying that the post screen does not show - call me funny if you like but I like to see this screen as it sort of confirms things are as they should be.

Don't know where to go from here - just left with maybe psu or graphics card being faulty but I don't think so as they were both fine in the previous sytem.

I am still tending to think that maybe I have a dodgy board or bios on the board - any other ideas????

Update:

To all those interested and trying to help......

Have run memtest on the memory and it passed no probs. I have set the memory at 1333 and everything else at stock. but still have the problem, but at least I reckon I have ruled memory out of the problem.

I may try a new psu - need to buy first. Failing that I am left with possible faulty graphics card or faulty board/bios - running out of ideas, but it is frustrating as otherwise it is a very nice setup.

Ok, I bet your are using a DVI input? This happens to my gigabyte P35 board. If I use the standard VGA input I can see the boot screen everytime.

Don't worry about it mate, enjoy your nice machine, and have a very happy new year.

That is interesting - but I never had this problem with the previous build a P5K del and Q6600 with the same graphics card. Wonder why that is ? but perhaps you are right and I should just enjoy and not worry about it - although it would be nice to get to the bottom of the problem.

Thanks

Hi Mark

I'm sure the delay is the bios deciding which input you are using, I can confirm this happens on two gigabyte boards. The first post screen I see, is either the raid detection screen, and sometimes its the later pcie raid card.

I can still get into bios by pressing delete on the black screen. If I change to the vga lead I can see all.

It could also be a combo of the type of monitor we are using, and the motherboard.

My P35 is about two years old, and has had this issue from day one, it has never failed me, and overclocks very well.

I can also go into bios and make a change, and then reboot and sometimes see the boot screen. I really don't think you have a problem with any of your hardware, just that slight delay which I agree canbe annoying.

Robert

PS I can confirm this also happens on a Asus P5Q pro.

The system is probably just not initialising the PEG slot fast enough as was already mentioned. It is a bit strange I haven't really seen it myself but if everything is working okay you probably don't want to worry too much about it.

Hi Robert,

Thanks very much for your input - you have summed up the situation spot on. I think although annoying it might be best to just live with it as you say as everything seems to work ok. I suppose if I am that bothered I could try connecting the screen by vga instead of dvi - might give it a go.

Thanks again

Mark
